Hi all.

Wanting to fly to KARB mid January for a funeral.

Minus the weather concerns that are always present up there, any other suggestions for the trip?

Thanks

Re: Ann Arbor

Jason, when I saw that I was hoping you were coming here to play. Sorry it has to be for a funeral. Ann Arbor is the west edge of my stomping grounds and the Ann Arbor airport is less than 10 NM from Detroit Willow Run where I base. Ann Arbor is a nice small airport with a tower and usually pretty decent fuel prices. It is kind of surprising they have a tower for their size, but U of M probably has something to do with that. It is part-time so check the hours. You are just outside the Detroit Bravo airspace. Advise you use Flight following. Detroit Metro controllers are always friendly and helpful and always take hand-offs from Toledo approach (who always takes hand-offs from Ft Wayne approach.) You will hit all of those coming up from Bowman.

Willow Run (YIP) is much larger, but mostly freight and GA, ILS in both directions and a 24-hour tower. It is further from Ann Arbor downtown than KARB, but not that much further if the deal works better. They do have car rentals at KARB as well as KYIP and I find college towns are great for UBER and LYFT. Those are my go-to's now in non-commercial airports. Usually far better than Taxi. KARB is south of town, just off of State Street which is the main drag that runs straight north right up through campus. A few blocks west is the other main drag, Main Street, where the actual downtown strip is. There are a bunch of hotels just north of the airport, Just above I-94, some up by campus and downtown.

If you are not familiar with AA, or A2, (you see both a lot), there are tons of restaurants and great bars and as a musician you no doubt have heard of The ARK, often rated by artists as the best small club to play in America. Small, intimate, not a bad seat in the house, up close and personal. I have seen of bunch of great artists there before they hit it big including, Sarah Jarosz, Aofie O'Donovan, Steep Canyon Rangers. And they still come back to The ARk because they love it. A lot of long-time favs like the Irish Rovers come through each year. Saw The Waifs recently (from Austraila) and WeBanjo3 from England -- both were excellent.

I realize you may be totally tied up with friends or family, but if you have a night open I'd love to go to a great local place for dinner and catch a show at The Ark. Let me know. Feel free to email me direct with any other questions.

Re: Ann Arbor

Thanks Scott. I appreciate the info.

The memorial/service is at U of M so KARB seems to fit the bill.

I would love to meet you but there is going to be a dinner event after the service and then we will fly home i.e. very quick in and out unless there are weather issues.

I will send a virtual hello nonetheless sir :)

Thanks again.

Re: Ann Arbor

I spend 1/2 my time in Ann Arbor. Aviation Center is the better of the 2 FBO's. Tough time of year to plan a trip unless your schedule is flexible. Icing is frequently an issue.

Yeah...I figured it may be one of those have to drive it trips but hoping for the best/dry skies.

Re: Ann Arbor

Hey Scott...

Did you happen to find that doc/article you wrote on Great lakes flying? Would sure like to read it.

I read some things on the lake effects on another site and it mentions the most dangerous times being when the lakes are warmer than the air. I am not sure that is an issue now considering how damn cold it is lol? In other words, is weather a little more predictable in the middle of winter?

Thanks.
