Hey guys, it would be really helpful to nail down the week and place. A lot of us are already booking things in September and October. About 1/3 of my weeks in those months are gone already. Any chance we can nail this down soon? Talking today with a guy who wants to schedule an event in September. There goes another week. Just guessing and hoping and this point.

For all those going to the fly-in...when you have a chance to take the tour at Dayton...on the Presidential tour (which must be signed up for when the doors open)..make note of the Boeing 707...tail# 26000...that is the plane that took President Kennedy to Dallas and returned to Washington with his coffin. You get to walk inside of it...very interesting

It would be nice if we could arrange a group tour of the Presidential hangar. That is also where the XB70 is located.

Re: And the location of the 2014 Fly-IN is ...

We have the tours in the schedule. There are 3 separate tours that require advance planning because they are in the controlled area of the Air Force Base. They are Presidential Gallery, R&D Gallery and Restoration Projects.
The main museum is a walk in or we can have tour guides assigned.
The Museum is busy that week end with the World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous (starts on Friday) and Saturday is Family Day: Dawn Patrol.
I will post a questionnaire 6 weeks before the Fly In. At that time we will have a better idea who will be attending and we can learn about your interest for the tours. We will then make arrangements for the special tours.

How can I confirm my registration electronically did make it?

Thank you,

Pete

An additional note about the special tours on the Air Force Base.

Note: A current government-issued photo ID (i.e. state ID or driver's license) is required for citizens of the U.S. and U.S. territories over age 18. All foreign visitors must present an original passport (NEXUS cards and foreign enhanced driver's licenses are not authorized at this time). Those under age 18 must be escorted by an adult (one adult per two children); children are not required to produce identification when accompanying their parents.

Just committed to attend the Dayton COG fly-in. Hated having to miss Fredericksburg, especially since it's so close to us, but had other commitments that could not be moved.

D'Ann says she will go with me to Dayton IF I have my Instrument Rating completed. Gonna give it my best shot, so hopefully she will join me.

Looking forward to meeting so many of the people I've come to know through the forums...

If worse comes to worse, have her go to DAY commercial and pick her up. Five min from MGY.

Hi Judi,

Payment completed and thank you again for your response. I had a senior moment and didn't check the page one original message to me.

Best regards,

Pete

Yeah... That would work, but I believe this falls under the category of "providing incentive" to get the IR done... LOL She's not a huge fan of flying in the first place, and in her mind, having the ticket would reduce the risk. I agree, and am working on it...

By the way, it's really quite amazing all the changes in IFR since I last flew IMC back in the early 80's. (I have a Commercial + Instrument Helicopter, but never finished my IR for fixed wing...) Not to mention the whole "GPS" thing...

Since my helicopter (Army OH-58A) had only a single ADF for NavAid, all our flight training (and much of our simulator time) was spent practicing ADF approaches. Nothing like practicing holds in an airplane with only a single ADF... (And God forbid you ever - even once - failed to verify you were tuned to the right NavAid with an Army Instrument Instructor Pilot on board! Made for some pretty high single-pilot workload under IFR...)

Which might just explain why one of my "requirements" when I was searching for a Commander as "NO ADF!" I grew to loathe the thing, even though I probably shot 200+ ADF-only approaches and was quite proficient. We (OH-58 pilots) used to joke about how the UH-1 and AH-1 pilots were spoiled rotten with their VOR/ILS+ADF cockpits. Heck, some of them even had TWO VOR receivers! They could identify intersections and hold points the "lazy" way... LOL

As I said, I'm LOVING the 430W and EX-500 in my Commander! Not to mention the C-IIB/STEC-60PSS autopilot. Never flew anything with a "real" autopilot before.

Re: And the location of the 2014 Fly-IN is ...

I affectionately referred to my ADF as the "boat anchor" or "door stop". When I did the upgrade, I made sure it was at the top of the list to get tossed. Actually gave it to a friend for his antique avionics collection. Now to add relativity, hope to see you in Dayton!
