Anyone been out to Alpine TX E38? We are going to fly out there early Friday morning - our first time to fly down there and we are really excited. My son (Midland TX) found a AirBNB somewhere in the area for us to stay in. Alpine looks to be a cool town - elevation of 4750' MSL and lots of neat things to do nearby - Marfa and the Big Bend National Park.

Make a trip to the McDonald Observatory if you have time.

We had a great trip - I highly recommend this area to anyone who can get there. The Alpine airport is a very accommodating bunch of people. I even got a hangar for my stay (hail storms both nights). 4,584' elevation, so be prepared for density altitudes reaching up to 8,000' depending on the time of day you take off. Early morning got me a 6,500+ DA and the 114B handled it with no problems. 3,080 lb TO weight got me a 400 ft / min climb @ 105 IAS. Hottest cylinder was #5 @ 390 degrees. We will definitely be back.

We made our second trip down here on Friday. Clear skies so we did go to the McDonald Observatory. I am not a "star gazer" by any means, but I have to admit that the "show" at the Observatory this past Friday night was spectacular. We even saw the International Space Station go by in the sky (I would not have known what it was except for the Observatory guide).

The weather was great. We did go back to Fort Davis for the second time. I am still grateful that I was not alive in 1880 and living at Fort Davis. Tough life. We have it much better today.

I was going to suggest getting the Chicken Fried steak at the Ft. Davis Drug Store hotel. When we do motorcycle rides out there we stay at the Stone Village Tourist camp. It looks rough from the outside but has been renovated very nicely. Glad y'all had a good trip!
