Leaving tomorrow afternoon for Memphis, TN, where *my* plane will be waiting for me! We'll fly it up to Jackson where it has just finished it's annual, and will do my dual instruction there over the next couple of days for the insurance.

After that, she's all mine, will be heading back to Austin over the weekend.

How cool is that, being picked up by your own plane! :D

Re: Adventure starts tomorrow

Well, I managed to get myself up into Jackson, TN, and to a hotel with wifi... that's about all the progress so far!

News from the annual though... the oil temperature is running on the hot side. A&P reports:
Everything looked good except the oil temp. I only flew for about 20 minutes and the oil temp was at about 230 - 235. Red line is 245. I don't know what to make of it. We didn't disturb any of that system other than the oil change. The oil pressure looked fine during the flight.

Any ideas where we should look? Gauge issue? Clogged oil cooler? Normal?

Might check baffling (flashlight looking back up through air intakes to look for gaps).
Vernatherm seating? Check seat and operation (place vernatherm in pan of boiling water to watch it operate full stroke).

Re: Adventure starts tomorrow

What are the ambient temps? Were the cowl flaps open? Is there an unsealed gap between the oil cooler and the oil cooler air intake tunnel in the cowl? This should be sealed with baffle materiel, or some people use a section of old inner-tube.

Re: Adventure starts tomorrow

114BL design is more like the 112's with a 540 stuffed in it. My cowl flaps closed vs open just a bit (25%) makes a 7* diff in oil temp.

Mostly I dont need to open them running at ~207*.
Naturally many factors involved.

Re: Adventure starts tomorrow

Check the logs for the last oil cooler flush. If more than five years or so, won't hurt to have it done and they will check your Vernatherm for free. Pacific is an honest and reasonable ovhl/cleaning shop.

An initial check is pretty easy. Use the heat and measure the expansion method mentioned by John. Documented somewhere... Sac Sky Ranch perhaps? When removed, examine the nose of the assy. If the burnished wear ring (worn from contacting the seat) doesn't run completely around the nose cone, you will either have to resurface the seat, get a new vernatherm, or buy the entire assy (housing + vernatherm) If that rascal doesn't seat, your oil will run hot. Period.
