2010 cog fly-in location

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

or mooning

I have no recollection of what you are talking about... All I can remember is a beautiful cabin and a kitchen island drawer full of beer..... Oh...and something about Alaska :)

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Good point, Jay, about flying approaches to Stennis and either landing or flying VFR to Diamondhead. I'm not convinced about flying below 500ft between the airports if the weather is much below that, but one could just put down at Stennis if it came to that. Weather at the Gulf Coast in October should be great, and there are nice escape fly-outs within reach.

I understand the attraction to Asheville, but looking at the hotel location, we're still left having to rent cars to go between the flight line and the hotel. If it comes to that, I would strongly vote for Savannah (KSAV) -- we could have an amazing group dinner at my cousin's restaurant in town, arguably the best in town. I've organised a sales meeting once at the Westin Savannah, and it was one of the best meeting spots I've ever used. It's just not the same when we're so detached from our aircraft though, in my opinion.

Can't we find anything like Boyne Mountain, but with more "suthren" charm and weather? I mean there must be some nice resort with its own airport somewhere in the Southeast.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I called the rep at Westgate River Ranch to find out some details ref a Fly-In There. Her name is Nancy. She said they could defiantly handle the planes. The Lake Amphibian Group just had a fly in there and they parked over 90 planes. The runway is fine with fuel and is located in the center of the complex. They have golf carts for rent and plenty of rooms of varied price with several locations to eat on site including buffets. They will entertain group discounts, golf cat inclusion, conference/meeting facilities, private dinners etc. Entertainment consist of fishing, swimming, tennis, air boats, coach rides, horses, trap and skeet, golf, several bars and a rodeo. The downside is that there is nothing and I mean nothing near this place one you leave the premise. We have had SE Commander Fly In’s there and enjoyed them for the day.
I would not consider the Bahamas’ or Grand Cayman. Much as I enjoy flying over there, I suspect the “hassle factor” of Customs, raft rental etc would limit your attendance. I hope to attend wherever it is, but please not Michigan in the Fall! I served my time in Detroit!
Hope this info helps. Nancy can be reached at Westgate’s River Ranch. Tell her Tom sent you!

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

If she defiantly handles the planes, sounds like she could have a controller job in Leesburg...

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

St Augustine would be a good location in northern Florida. The Trinidad Owners Group had a fly-in there last year with around 30 aircraft. All the aircraft were parked in a separate area. A hangar had been arranged for workshops.

The city is close to the airport and has a vast range of hotels and facilities. There are plenty of restaurants, great scenery, and plenty of shopping.

This would require some transportation arrangement between hotel and the airport.

River Ranch as suggested by Tom is also a good location. It does lack shopping..... Which may be good for the credit cards....

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Richard,

I don't know about you, but if there is nothing for the the significant others (non-pilots) to do ...it will make for one ugly weekend..... I like Steve Koenig's idea about a fly-out to Mountain Aire... Always wanted to see that place.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

There's Mountain Aire (this can be one challenging place to land...) and Heavens Landing, probably both worth checking out.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

What could be worse than Gatlinburg?...Pigeon Forge.

Another reason we should look inland...... Or ...........why I don' t jog....

Beach jogger killed by plane likely never heard it
March 17, 2010 - 7:56am

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The kit-built single-engine plane was gliding quietly as it came down for an emergency landing on a beach. Pharmaceutical salesman Robert Gary Jones, listening to his iPod while jogging, likely never saw or heard it before the aircraft hit him from behind Monday evening and killed him.

"There's no noise," said aviation expert Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general for the National Transportation Safety Board. "So the jogger, with his ear buds in, and the plane without an engine, you're basically a stealth aircraft. Who would expect to look up?"

The 38-year-old Jones, whose mother said he was serious about nutrition and exercise, especially jogging, was on a business trip to Hilton Head for GlaxoSmithKline. He was looking forward to getting home to the northern Atlanta suburb of Woodstock, Ga., for his daughter's third birthday Wednesday, Pauline Jones said.

"I was never so shocked in all my life," she said of learning the news, her voice shaking. "They say that God only gives you what you can handle. I said, 'You know what, I've reached my max.'"

The pilot, Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., and his lone passenger walked away from the crash landing near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office named the passenger as David Henry, 59, also of Chesapeake, The Island Packet newspaper reported.

Smith was on the beach Tuesday, when the four-seater aircraft was hoisted onto a trailer hitched to a pickup truck and towed away.

"I've got a lot of issues going on right now," Smith said. "I've got a plane that's all torn up. And I've got a young man that I killed."

The Lancair IV-P aircraft had lost its propeller, with oil smeared all over its windshield, making visibility difficult, authorities said. It was "basically gliding" when it instantly killed Jones, said Ed Allen, the coroner for Beaufort County on the South Carolina coast.

The plane took off from Orlando, Fla., at 4:45 p.m. Monday and was en route to Virginia when it started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet, said Joheida Fister, spokeswoman for Hilton Head Island fire and rescue.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway said no cause had been determined. He said the plane would be inspected in Virginia and that investigators would interview the pilot and any witnesses.

"We don't know what occurred, especially since we haven't actually examined the aircraft," Holloway said. "We are still gathering facts."

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman referred inquiries to the NTSB.

Even with oil smeared on the windshield, Schiavo, the former NTSB official, said Smith should have been able to see through a small window on the side of the plane and possibly yell out to anyone below. Still, there may have been little time to try to avoid hitting the jogger, she said.

She said Smith made the right choice in landing on the beach rather than the water. The aircraft likely wasn't carrying flotation equipment.

"Planes like this sink like a rock," she said.

Bartels, who had seen online news photos of the damaged plane, called the landing "miraculous" given the damage to it, but also expressed sorrow at the deadly outcome.

Jones' mother, who lives in Dunedin, Fla., said he was a wonderful husband to his wife, Jennifer. The couple also has a 5-year-old son.

Pauline Jones said she's going on "borrowed strength."

"It's been very difficult," she said. "I haven't been to bed since I heard. I haven't had any sleep."

Also a good reason why I bought a Commander instead of building a Lancair... Yo Jim, Do I really need all these extra bolts?

Where was the very first CAC fly-in hosted, like back in 1996 or 1997? It was at a resort, with runway, in GA? I remember the event was expensive, although I did not attend it, but thought the higher expense was related more to CAC sponsorship than anything else.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Callaway Gardens, Brad. Scott mentioned this option earlier/Pine Mountain, it was Springtime, tho.. big draw for the flower conservatory, etc. CAC hosted a dinner buffet out there and it was quite spectacular. forget the name of the hotel, but it wasn't anything really nice/but had restaurant and bar. BAR!? we're in!
not sure about Oct., tho?? I'll dig back in my files and see what that was.

This one is a bit close to home for me I know the Lancair IVP builder he's a terrific guy and did a superb job over the last 3 years. As he says he has to deal with the guilt of having accidently killed the nice jogger who has a wife and 2 kids. News got it wrong though he has a TSIO 550 turbo charged engine not a turbine (he'd have been up higher if itwas a turbine). He must have been a bit far off shore or he could have made the Hilton Head airport.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

My comment about the Hurricane Season is not that it might or could occur during or on those dates. The problem is after a Hurrican hits - it could weeks or months before any businesses are back up and running.
And the only reason I bring it up is because I am a Independent Insurance Adjuster and have worked most of the Hurricanes along the East Coast from the tip of FL to DC and all of the Gulf Coast including TX for many years.
Not trying to throw a damper on any location but I do think it should be taken into account when planning as the process is difficult enough. I have planned events and I don't envy anyone that is involved.

And BTW those that say they have had events in the "west" - AZ and TX" are not the West. Anything East of the Rockies is either midwest or East to us Western folks. Although we did finally get rid of all the covered wagons. We now have paved roads.

Most Excellent Quip BB!

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

We will in no way consider Bahamas or Cayman. This is a great idea for a small group fly-in, but for COG we have to consider attracting the greatesty number of people while still moving the venue around, and those two would simply elilminate too many folks. Put that one to bed.
