2010 cog fly-in location

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I suggest the Asheville area.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

As Frank stated the Fly-in is scheduled to be held during Hurricane season. We may want to consider somewhere a little more inland not only due to the season but make the flight easier on those not on the east coast. Pinehurst, NC would be my recommendation. Asheville, although a little more expensive, is a nice place and should be considered as well.

I spoke with people in St. Augustine yesterday and he said they hadn't had a hurricane actually hit them since '97. Something about a jetstream from Cape Canaveral that pushes the storms out to sea south of them. Of course they get the rains though. Thought that was interesting.

Good point Jim.

Not that it matters that much once you have flown so far. But I agree.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Chances to get hit by a hurricane at the end of the season on a 3-7 days window are equal to the chances to win the lottery, almost null. Not that I care too much, whatever the place and the weather, getting the opportunity to meeting with good friends is the most important thing.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

cross wind hurrican landings are cool.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I still remember well a "hover" landing @ Manteo, NC. Total ground roll was less than 50'. Timewise a very long one mile final.

Tom:

Did River Ranch have Hotels that day? I don't seem to remember that.

But you are right, it was nice, not sure if it can hold that many planes.

Good reason to go back huh????

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Thank heavens we're staying south this time -- it's a shame, but Boyne was just too wet and cold! Maybe we should try to limit ourselves to airports with fuel and instrument approaches, just to keep everyone safe.

I agree Jekyll Island is nice and very reasonable, but there's no fuel available. Perhaps we could get someone to drive a fuel bowser over from Brunswick? (If you like that area, St Simons Island (KSSI) is very nice and has lots of space. Could be a winner if there's a hotel close enough for walkers.)

Diamondhead sounds great until you notice that there's very little room for aircraft parking and no instrument procedure. Moore County and most of the other suggested airports don't have any accommodation on the field, which means we're all renting cars.

This is harder than I thought...

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Never easy...

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

We go into it every year just accepting the fact that some will not like the choice. Doesn't mean we don't try ... but it's part of the territory.

Those suggesting locations ... keep it up ... please don't simply say, "Newark would be great!" but get on AirNav and check hotels listed and distance or grab the FBO office and google search it then search hotels, look at the Satelite view for ramp space or grass that works, etc. etc. many hands makes light work and all that. Just throwing out a name doesn't help us a lot.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Does the meeting have to be in the southeast?

Why not the southwest?

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Diamondhead has HSA Stennis 3miles west with approches. We had 26 airplanes here last Saturday. We can park at least 45 without any trouble around the circle. If we need more we can park along the 3 taxiways.
We have plenty parking. If weather turns bad fly the ILS to HSA, then request a contact approch to 66y there is nothing over 175 ft high between the two airports. you come in over water on 36. If this helps. If you need more info call me.
One of the casinos has expressed interest in helping sponser the event.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Sounds pretty good Jay kinda far for me to fly though? Could i get a loan for fuel if we have it there? LOL

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

WHY SE and not SW? We already covered that. It's their turn. Since were in Gatlinburg -- sort-of SE -- we were at both Sedona and Texas. I THINK this is the last 7 ... someone correct any errors.

2003 - OK City
2004 - Gatlilnburg
2005 - Sedona
2006 - Cape Girardeau
2007 - Cape Girardeau
2008 - Texas (Hangar Hotel)
2009 - Boyne Mtn MI

If its held at a Casino Place it becomes completely unappealing to me personally, but we can't decide on one person's feelings unless others feel the same. Just a personal thing. I have to go to Vegas 5-7 times a year for the past 20+ years and I just despise the Casino environment. (And no, not because I have lost. 100 nights at least in Vegas Casinos and I have never sat at a table or dropped a nickel in a slot. No appeal to me. Flying around Ice and Thunderstorms and being in the housing industry has way overfilled my risk quotient!) But hell, I could stay at another hotel. There are plenty. But I would rather camp in the grass by the runway than have to shuttle in rental cars.

OK more specific. Asheville, NC. Here:

I've never been to Asheville, but I hear it's well worth going too. It certainly makes the grade for the non-pilot guests.

We were in Sedona, AZ and Fredericksburg, TX in the past few years. Will be out west again. Try to alternate regional locations.

Asheville is a great place. I'm in and out of there on a regular basis due to relatives in the area. The folks @ Odyssey (current incarnation of the primary FBO) are exceptionally nice but fuel is pricey. Probably need to do some negotiating on deals. Odyssey corp HQ is in TX I believe. Pretty good ramp space but can get busy. Maint on field for any in need. Fog is a regular visitor to the field in the mornings. Holiday Inn isn't walking distance but less than 5 min drive. Several entry level hotels nearby (Days Inn, Comfort Inn, etc.) Couple of very "splashy" hostelries in the AVL area for those inclined. Plenty of rental cars available. Good ILS's available in both directions. Commercial ops for those unable to fly their own into field. Most importantly for Scott,... mostly friendly controllers. Couple of newbies that are still learning to maximize flow and that FLIB's don't routinely descend @ 2,000 FPM.

(I'm going to regret this... if we end up there, we can get some groups together for a 30 min flyout over to our place on Lake Keowee and we'll do some boating.)
