Members: We move the annual COG Fly-In arouind each year so that we see and experience different parts of the country and access the greatest number of members. Although we had been thinking we would return to Cape Girardeau, the impending sale of CPAC is still going through its slow process and we feel we should move on to another location and hope that CGI will become our 2011 location. We have not been to the SouthEast in many, many years and we are strongly considering going that way in mid -to-late September or early October. We are mindful that economic times are tough for many and that many great locations will simply price us out unless we have the quantity to negotiate a good price.

Our basic criteria are:
  1. Hotel/lodge rooms on airstrip or within easy walking distance of ramp. (this makes rental cars optional, reducing cost.)
  2. Parking on ramp for at least 60 or more planes (we think SE will be a good draw, barring hurricances!)
  3. Room availability for $149 or less, or a range of prices. Anything less than that is a bonus.
  4. Banquet room facilities (i.e. if it is ALL cabins, we have a problem!)
  5. Fly-out opportunities (a bonus that people seem to like.)
IF you know of potential sites for tha annual COG Fly-In that meet these criteria in the following states ONLY:

N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama ...

... please post them here and write what you know about them and include a website. This is not a "vote" per se, because many, many factors have to be considered from fuel price to room price, to catering, to proximity to commercial options for those from far away, to rental car availability to fly-out opportunites, etc. But we are very interested in the possibilities and what appeals to the group.

Note: we are not soliticiting input on dates at this time and although you may know of a great place in Idaho or Arkansas or Vermont, please limit comments on this thread to locations meeting the specific criteria in these states. Thanks.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

are there any SE fly-in locations with the hotel adjacent to the runway ... that's a big plus.

I'll need to research which locations have hotel facilities next to an airport, but in any event, count me in this year for any of the states listed! I haven't been able to attend since the COG Fly-In in Tennessee in 2004. The first places that come to mind are on the Atlantic coast, such as Manteo, NC and Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head, SC. I'll let you know what I find.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Hilton head has the range of accommodations, from economical to stupidly expensive.
Myrtle is like a giant boardwalk with way too many tourists and not quaint enough (IMHO).

Vote : Hilton Head.- HXD
Now they can probably accommodate about 75 airplanes on that ramp for a couple of days.
What was the fly-in count over the last couple of yrs ? I am sure we could get a fuel discount et al.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

We need to extend this South East thing a little further south, just some 950 NM south of Key West so we can visit some beach resorts at either MRTR, MRCR, MRQP or MRTM.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I'm up for the Grand Caymans!!!!! The Cayman Caravan has been discontinued but It would be nice if a bunch of us wanted to Fly out there together sometime

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Maybe do the fly-in and then do another informal one at the Grand Cayman.
I would be up for that ..

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

what about m43 scotts been there

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

We have everything you want right here on the Gulf Coast. Including Casino's and two Gulf courses on site.If you want to include Mississippi on your list. $3.75 fuel hotels from $49.00 pn and up. If there is any interest I'll get more info and costs for the banquet rooms. We have had several type fly- ins here in the past. Commanche, Stearman and Navion.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Okay ... we will entertain Mississippi but that's stretching "SE." That is as far as we go. Caymans or Bahamas are swell but not practical for a fly-in, so start another thread if you want to discuss that option please.

Again ... accomodations by or within a short walk from the ramp get top consideration.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

You might want to check out River Ranch. Located in Central Florida just South of Orlando. Great runway with meeting facilities and entertainment on site. Golf carts readily availbable. We have had SE Commander Fly In at the location and we really liked it. Plus, I suspect they are hungry and will give you a great package including rooms, theater, carts, golf etc.

Woohoo!! With a rodeo on premises we can bring Lonnie out of retirement. It'll sure beat the bear statue at Boyne. :D

Frank,

LOL!! My first thought was.... What? No Bear?

Very Nice place.. maybe too nice for some, but perfect for others.

Personally, I think we'd be thrown out of there the first day! :)

I like the spreadsheet on hotels they show for the Moore County, NC destination. seems like a good spot bet. N.E. and S.E.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I was just kidding about M43 not sure if Biloxi would be a good one for the airport is a towered and may be a pain getting in and out but who knows. I have a fellow bull riding traveling partner Tater Porter who lives not far from River Ranch and said its nice. I flew into to Kissimmee instead due to the weather at time and I don't think they had fuel at river ranch but cant remember. Orange beach would be a good one in southeast plenty of fun in sun and nice airport and beautiful water but no rooms on the field. I like the idea of the rooms being walking distance or real close to the planes and of coarse the Bar. RB&V

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Per AirNav River Ranch does have fuel.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Diamondhead Ms. (66Y) 2 hotels within walking distance of the runway. Casino's with free transport to them. Hotel with meeting rooms on site. 2 gulf courses on site. Shopping malls 16 miles away. Deep sea fishing, fly outs to dinning, shopping or even New Orleans 50 miles away. Navy air museum. List is endless. not to mention Hangars available if weather turns bad. By the way this is a private gated airport community. That means secure and you never know when an air show with stearmans might happen. Stearman rides are a sure thing. There are 3 based here.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I was thinking Jekyll as well.

Used to be a real expensive place back in the 20's and 30's.

I think there is even some Howard Hughes history there.

If the prices are good, would be a nice place to go. Lots of local fly-out locations as well.

Hilton Head and Myrtle are good too!
