Plane spotting again, last month at Le Touquet, two 114's not seen before, anyone know them? I have a feeling G-BHSE is at Wycombe in a group and OO-SFL is owned by a Simon Michel in Belgium, apparently Simon flew from Paris to Quebec in it a couple of years ago, I guess he also flew back???

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

what are the badges/decals on the third one about?
p.s. nice sunshades!

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Scott

It has to do with the trans Atlantic flight in 2005 which was supposed to go all the way from Paris To Oshkosh with 19 other light aircraft, it carries sponsors logos. Perhaps someone on the trip will read this and fill in the details.

My little hop to Iceland planned next summer looks a bit poor in comparison.

I like the way he has augmented the cabin ventilation with extra holes under the tail scoop.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Hey Lawrence, Have the same plan!!! Check out http://xpda.com/flyingtoeurope/ as well. Full of interesting ideas. Sit in the blue lagoon and watch the jets flying east to west at the high flight levels. Or the black volcanic sands (ice cold version of Hawaii) Me and my flying pal are presently trying on dry immersion suits. We have the Winslow raft already of course! We plan a long weekend to the Faroes too as a taster. Also have a route that refuels at either Sumburgh or Lerwick for Stavanger as we talked about the midnight sun at Tromso. There's a very knowledgeable guy at Wick called Andy Bruce at Far North Aviation who is worth talking with as well. He knows stuff about fuel line splicing and extended range tanks... Rob

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Rob,

Shouldn't need the ferry tanks for the trip I have planned, longest leg is around 250 miles over water via Faroes. I am using this as a tester for the Transatlantic hop I am planning in 2012. Hopefully will be IR rated by then and able to fly above FL55 in the Oceanic class A.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

You know, coming to think of it. It would rather interesting if the US based Commanders could meet the European based Commanders in Iceland for fly-in.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

I'm up for it if you are. Around June/July next year.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Interesting idea Alex...

I don't think Kathy would like the sounds of this. :)

She likes places like Florida, Bahamas, Mexico. Iceland sounds a little cold - brrrrr! :)

LOL - You should have seen the look on her face when I told her we were going to Michigan for this years fly-in. She's glad she went though, we had a great time.

If you put the Iceland trip together, I'll see what I can do. :D

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Count me in for Iceland 2010.

A few of us could return with the European Commanders to the UK.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Not sure... AOPA Flight Planner doesn't list Iceland airports.... I'm limited by my tools!

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

now that would be a long trip. but a good one.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Confirmed, Red Bull on sale in Iceland, should I book you in then Lonnie?

To be serious for a moment, I'm going to be doing this trip anyway, if anyone else is serious about coming along I am only too happy to make it a COG fly-in. Looks like Rob may be along at the same time.

I have made an Icelandic contact on another forum who is giving me information on flying in that area and it really looks quite achievable from both directions. Even VFR. Perhaps we should start another thread and test the waters (probably the wrong choice of word).

There is only really one time of year to do this tip, mid summer, so have a look in your diaries and see if you have the space in July or August.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Good idea Lawrence. I'm keen although we were planning for May but I think the summer's is good. The Iceland AIP is bilingual and has a variety of approaches including GPS type. There's a handful of large fields for arrival and departure but many smaller ones.
We have to get together sometime Lawrence!

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Just a dumb question, but where do we lose our GPS databases for those flying from the west? Also, what is the longest over water distance from the west?

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

Iceland is on the Garmin International Database which I use, it is every country in the world except the USA and Canada. The longest overseas leg is Greenland-Iceland around 344 KTM. Have a look at Rob's post with the link and there is a crossing the Atlantic guide. I will be adding a stop in the Faroes making the longest leg around 250 miles from Iceland to Faroes.

I will be flying VFR as my IMC runs out after Shetland.

Rob, If you are down this way give me a call, 07766 745822

I visit the family in Glasgow about every 3 months weather permitting, I'll pop you a PM if I'm in your area.

I'm only looking to go July/Aug as my contact over there advises that this is the only time VMC is more than likely to happen consistently.

Re: 2 Commanders at Le Touquet

We planned a stop for a day or two in the Faroes as well. July or August would be fine with us I think. Now have your mob on my phone Lawrence thanks. I'm 07595911175.
Time to start the Iceland Thread. ?
