  • Hey Ken I see these older posts from 2008 about the HYC5006 but can you give anymore insight about just replacing the motor and not the entire power pack and where we can get the motor and how to go about replacing it? I had gear that wouldn't go down and ran the pump for at least 45 minutes while troubleshooting and am sure I burned out the motor. We get 12V on both the up and down cycle of the gear level so pretty sure it's the motor :). Any help would be appreciated as they want $4k for a new power pack!
    Hi Ken,

Can you send me a picture of the bulkhead connection that Sven made for your brake lines in the wheel well? Thinking about replacing my crappy, bent up lines.

    Thanks,

    Carl
    Hello Ken,

Do you still have any power pack motors available? Thanks in advance. Shane (112A - # 228)

Yes, I have just four left, I am about to order another batch. Let me know if you want one.

    Ken,
this is Robert adams, you helped Joe Matthews and I on our pre buy for our commander 112tca a few years ago.
i am now in the Augusta area and have met bill Morin. He has purchased a 112 hot shot and has having some issues. I thought you would be the person to talk to if you wouldn’t mind. At your convenience Robert Adams 9126602800.
just replaced engine and not achieving 2700 rpm (2550). Seems to run rich. Will run rough at idle and cut off.
    thanks

Hey Ken! Can you give me a quick rundown on how I might get a replacement hydraulic pump? My motor failed yesterday, and when I took the motor off, the brushes were non-existent! I have, a friend with an electric motor shop, but he isn't in the shop till Tuesday. Going through posts, but hope you may have an in!?

Hey Ken, It’s been a while!!! Hunter and I keep threatening to call you and come down for a visit but just haven’t found a time to make it work yet!!

How are things going? Health, Life, Home, Commander - still all in good shape?

Are you guys doing an owner assisted annual this year? I took your advice about every 2 or 3rd year having a “Paid” annual done last year ….. and although there were “no significant issues” when they finished the inspection, I still got a bill for $7,400 for that annual …. and in my humble opinion they didn’t do half as good a job as we did with you the first year when Hunter and I came down!

Let me know if you guys are doing a “group” owner-assisted annual again this year and I’ll definitely make it work somehow. I can’t be shelling out 7-8K to these knuckleheads up here every year and having it come back with half the problems it went with on top of it! I think mine is due mid May or so for next annual, but if we did earlier I don’t mind….assuming you are gonna do it again this year!

Hope all is well! Hunter and I talk about ya all the time!!!!

I woulda texted you but somehow I lost your phone number, and I haven’t been on the commander forum for probably 4-6 months just due to life and such :). My mobile # is 740.706.1727

    Kind regards,

Hi Phil, my cell phone is 229 407-0200 and email, Ken@AndrewTent.com,

Can't do a group annual this year, still very busy on the house, we can sure plan it for 2025.. My last annual took for ever as I was only spending an hour a day on it. then had to wait on Kirby for a month to get out here, he has been snowed under at work.

It seems like the house is taking forever, I was in a camper behind the pool for 9 months, I now have a bedroom that is useable but not completed. Look forward to the day I can have a kitchen to cook in.

I see you are trying to organize a group annual close to home, that is a great Idea and keep me posted how it works.

Life is a barrel of fun.

    Ken
    Ken,

great idea with the motors. Combine these with Phil’s GUCV and they make a great benefit to COGers. Does Arco want upfront tooling charges or have a Minimum Ordering Quantity to manufacture the motor assy’s? COG officers have been discussing some options around dealing with parts that require minimum orders and such. We can discuss by phone if desired.

I will buy them in batches of 20, I told them that I estimated that I would need about 20 per year. I have three pumps on my bench right now awaiting the motors. also have 10 firm orders so I will be ordering some more fairly soon. The only thing I don’t know right now is the shipping cost. It’s just going to be a couple of weeks before the first batch arrives and I want to test them thoroughly. They have so many blueprints of the motors and everything conforms to my measurements.
Hi Ken, I need to make a small fiberglass repair under my top cowling. What materials would you recommend? Was thinking standard E-glass tape 2inch and West System 105 epoxy resin and 205 hardener... from Aircraft Spruce. Thanks for your advise.

Darren, unfortunately I have no experience with fiberglass repair. The TC drivers have to work on cowling all the time. You may want to look into a boat repair shop. They deal in fiberglass every day.

My name is Paul and I have a 1977 114 - N4887W. I have been working on cradle for installing and removing the lower cowl and I have something that seems to do the job somewhat easy. The nice thing about this cradle is you can roll the lower cowl in and out of position and store it without much trouble. If you are interested I can send you pictures of what I have and maybe you can improve my design.

You can email direct at: paul.doris@verizon.net

Yes, please send me pictures of it. On your 114 the gear doors stay in place, on my 112 they are part of the lower cowl. Always looking for new ideas. I have tried so many ways over the years. I remove the lower cowling on jacks with the gear up and it is tight getting it past the exhaust pipe, Hotshot,, I idea is always very slowly and always having complete control.
    Looking forward to your pic.

    Thanks.

Hi Ken, my mechanic says it needs to be rebuilt or replaced because it doesn't hold pressure in the gear slowly drops back down.

Go to the Commander Owners Group and contact Phil Caomado, He can sell you a new "Gear Up Check Valve" for about 350.00 and have your mechanic install it. It takes me about fifteen minutes to change one.. All the info is on COG. He can call me if he needs to and I can talk him through it. Hope your mechanic has capped it off to make sure that is the problem, they are the first thing to fail on the pump. Cell 229 407-0200
    Hi,
My A&P thinks that the pump needs to be rebuilt and it's quoting me around $4,000 it's a 1976 Commander 114 serial number 14045. I could use any help I can get thanks in advance
Hey Ken... thanks for the info... I was going to call a couple of the members to ask a couple of questions about the landing gear... do you have a minute to talk about a landing gear issue on 1102J?
    ksandrew
    ksandrew
Call me anytime, generally go to bed about 11. I am not an expert by any means but have spent a lot of time and effort learning my landing gear to save spending the big bucks. My first Commander was a 112B with the new style gear system, my present one N1182J is ser. no 155 so the older style.. Reading your posts I could not get an idea of what the problem is. I have not come across a Commander gear problem that was not solvable without spending big buck, this includes pumps. The problems are easy to fix, it is the diagnosis that is difficult.. Tell me a little bit about yourself, are you mechanically inclined, do you have a good A&P AI that you work with. The average mechanic knows nothing about the Commander gear system. and having no idea tend to start replacing perfectly good parts, pump and pressure switches especially. The Commander gear guide is a fantastic source
    of information.
Are you wanting to learn about your Commander?

My cell number is 229 407-0200, if you hear a lot of noise I am on the tractor and it takes me a few minutes to shut down. then you will hear me.

    Call anytime;

Ken, I am wanting to change out my pilot and co-pilot windows. My questions is, are there rivets holding the window in? On the outside of the door, it looks like there is 100's of flush rivets or maybe a tach weld around the window? Do you have any pictures of directions for removing the the window and replacing them. 1977 - 114. Any advice is appreciated.

I changes out the co-pilot side window during an owner assisted annual at the Commander factory. It all went well except I did not have the correct rivets to start off with. They use a floating rivet and I will have to think what they are called. No welding and all done from the inside. I took the door off and had it on a carpet covered bench, took it all apart from the inside. I did have a hard time matching the tint that was on the pilots side. Also included the small window that I took from the old glass to the new, It is a glass like material and does not deteriorate like the main window part. I do remember holding white pasteboard on the inside to measure the color and intensity of the tint. Not a bad job if you can get the right rivets. I will get back to you when I find the correct name for tham.

I’m pretty new to retract gear airplanes, but I’ve spent my whole life as a trouble shooter and mechanic for Hyd systems.
I always isolate one piece at a time.
If you have a actuator or basically a Hyd cylinder capped on both ends and can still move it then it’s internal wear on the piston orings.
On my 112 the internal orings on e dump were wore and allowing a small flow back to tank. Capping the return line verified this.

Again not a aviation mechanic but this stuff is so much simpler than my $700,000 asphalt pavers.

I have capped all three cylinders at the same time and still get loss of pressure.. I assume you have the troubleshooting guide, could the e-dump valve be a check valve that can be open with the lever? where the 5606 flows through it when the gear is raised . the other way for the oil to go should be prevented by the gear up check valve. Just thinking.

When you cap the cylinders off is the gear down?
I was referring to if seals are good in cylinders and are capped they shouldn’t be able to creep down.
My dump valve just lets pressurized oil return to tank
Ken, Kiko Picornell with 1977J. We spoke at the annual get together about sharing the maintenance entry or 337 covering the conversion to the newer style fuel selector without doing the entire service bulletin. Can you share that with me ? Thanks..Kiko
    ksandrew
    ksandrew
    Hi,

I have searched to logs and find no entry for the fuel selector. Sven gave me a CD of pictures on 82Juliet that he took as he did work on her. There are pics of the fuel selector , taken apart and it shows the date taken as 11/31/2002, there are no log book entries about the time.
Just spent a few hours going through the pictures, I keep finding more every time I go there. There a pictures of many things that do not show up in the logs, my only clue is to look at the date the picture was taken (not modified)

The fuel selector show serial number 681 but another pic I found shows number 1180 so not sure where second picture came from. I am fixing to replace the o rings in mine so will know its true serial number then.

In 2008 Sven changed the gascolator and installed a "Steves Aricraft" gascolator, seems to work very well, clean it at annual and never found any dirt it it and it still looks like new inside.
I have never had any problems with the system as it is. Sven generally had a very good reason for anything he did, he always researched very thoroughly before doing something. He started to tell me his reasoning for not installing the drains but I do not remember the reasons.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
