  • Carl... hope you are well. So how much are the fairings... and how difficult are they to install? I've often wondered that the litte CO detections I get in the cockpit when on the ground taxing around is because of the cheap rubber fairings that are on my plane now. Thanks so much!

    Hi Kevin,
All good here, thanks! Hope all is well with you as well. The fairing kit is 900. All 4 wings + the bonus of new flap linkage covers. Now that I've reworked the horizontal stabilizer molds, installation is simple.
Not sure about co in the cabin, but you can hear the difference when you're flying. They make airflow over the wings quieter.
Hi Carl - I saw in one of the posts that you had landing gear light kits in the past - I would like to add them to my '76 114 - any chance you still have a kit please?
Or if not, perhpas an alternative solution please?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Andreas,
I'm working on producing some more of these kits. Check back with me in a month, or so.
    Hi Carl,

I hope you’re doing well with your new found freedom. I just had a quick question for you. I know you are or did sell your commander business, but I was curious if you still were dealing with earthX. I need to find one of the foam battery box inserts and wandered if you still had access to them. If so, could you please let me know how to obtain one. My email is N1858J@icloud.com or phone number is (803) 305-5763. Take care and thank you for all you have done for the Commander community.

    Kind regards,

    Darrell

    Hi Darrell,

Thanks. We're doing ok here. Still very busy!
I haven't sold it yet, but I've scaled it way back. I can still get EarthX products, but for just the foam insert I'd say to just go to them directly earthxbatteries.com.

Will see you at the next fly in:-)
What's current price and availability on MT prop for 114?

Carl, I have a small fiberglas fix to do on my upper cowling. What materials would you suggest? Was thinking West System 105 and 205 hardener.. What cloth would you use? Thanks
    carllee
    carllee
For minor to moderate repair work any type of fiberglass material is fine. Almost any modern materials will ne better than the original material you're working to repair.
    Hi Carl,
Saw your post on wanting help with RCM. Well, I certainly ain’t younger than you and I’m not an A&P but if there’s anything I can help with, just yell. I’ve got time and half a brain. Not looking for pay either, just would like to lend a hand if you can use one.

Thanks Bill. I'm getting old and tired. I'm hoping to find a protege that I can pass the RCM business on to. Not sure if I'll be able to find someone, but would sure like to see it continue beyond me:-)
Hey Carl, tried to call you but went to voicemail. Here are the DXF files. I did a little more clean up. Glenn asked for them and I also gave it to him, but I agree with you that any design improvement should be made before anything is made.

Sorry about that. I didn't see a call from you. Did you call 805-215-2982

Hi Carl... hope you are good. So I'm a new Commander owner, bought N226VC in early November 2022. The engine was "high time," and it will be coming back online in the next week after a major overhaul of both the engine and the prop. So I saw you say something about a nose gear system bolt (5/16?) in the thread about the article in FLYING, and wanted to learn more about that. How would I know that I have an upgrade here, or need one?

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Kevin,

Congratulations on your new purchase, and welcome aboard. There might be a log book entry indicating the upgrade, if not I can guide you through a visual inspection.
If you have a minute, give me a call. 805-215-2982
Carl, can you give me a call, please. I am interested in the nose gear doors.

Hey Carl! Got any suggestions on our $1,500 exhaust clamp? Since I'm at 650 hrs on mine going into annual, I'm screwed. Also ready for a battery. Will that Earthx battery box allow for relay mounts? Or should I just get the foam?k
    carllee

    Hi Kelly,

I don't know what to tell you about the clamp. I ordered a couple Cessna clamps just to have as extras back in November - haven't seen them yet! Do your's 100% need to be changed?

The foam is the way to go. Fits perfectly, and eliminates the need for a drain line.
    Carl,
I've noticed a slight shimmy on landings. So I ordered a complete Torque scissor link rebuild kit from General Aviation and a Shimmy Damper Kit.

My question is what is best method to remove old bushings part 53 AA-401-3 out of the Body and Collar Assembly? I've noticed guys using tap/bolt method to remove bushings from parts that are removable from aircraft... But not the Collar Assembly!!!

Do you have a recommended method? Thanks for your help.

I usually use allen head bolts to draw bushings out. I just grind the head down to a slightly smaller diameter than the bushing, put a socket, or something on the other side with a slightly larger I'd than the bushing, and just draw it out.
    Hi Carl,
I hope my message finds you doing well and enjoying this holiday weekend. We've chatted in the past I own N1383J Hotshot from your company. I love the plane! Love the Hotshot!!

My plane has a two blade Hartzell prop... On one of our phone conversations you and I were both puzzled about it. I purchased the plane two years ago, so "Who Knows" where the 3 blade prop is??

    My question is as follows:

    1) What numbers (climb, cruise speed, weight savings) are you typically seeing with the 3 blade MT prop on 112A Hotshot?

    2) Do you have a pre-owned prop available?

    3) If we purchase from you new what is the typical delivery times now?

    Thanks for your response.

    Hi Darren,

Thanks! We're doing well down here, Hope y'all are doing good as well!

The 3 blade Hartzell propeller is a separate STC that was approved many years after the Hot Shot was developed, so they're not part of the approved system. The Hot Shot is approved for the 2 blade Hartzell, 3 blade Hartzell, and the 3 blade MT. I test flew, and added the MT about 8 years ago, and it is the best (imho) because it's the most modern technologically, and it's the lightest (our poor little 112's really need the extra useful load).

There are so many factors that come into play, especially when trying to compare the performance of two 50 year old airplanes:-) The numbers I see may not be anywhere near what you see, but because of the increased surface area of the propeller blades when going from a 2 blade to a 3, you will see an increase in climb performance. At lower altitudes you may not see any increase in cruise, but at higher altitudes the 3 blade will help a lot.

I don't have any in stock.

Delivery, if ordered today, would be around August or September.

A 3 blade MT is a real game changer for our airplanes - quiet, smooth, better throttle response, shorter approaches, and shorter ground roll - really changes the flying experience.

Couldn't find the post that I responded to - I am back in the room. Here is the drawing that I think you're looking for from the engine manual.

Sorry, it's hard to tell from pictures. It looked like a composite type gasket. I'm not sure what else you can do. Maybe try replacing it again, and re-torqueing it again. Also maybe make sure the surface on the flange side is clean and true.
