  • Hi,

I see you own a 1973 112 with serial# 102. I am in the process of purchasing serial# 105. It has the hot shot turbo on it. I'm curious how you like your early model 112? I'm not concerned about the low useful load as I will mostly be flying by myself on maybe one other person with little to no luggage but I'm curious about how you like yours. Any insight you can give a potential 112 owner would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    John Barden

Hey John, I owned my airplane since 2019 and I must say It's the best out there. I am going to list it for sale soon (my wife is pregnant) so I need to let it go, but it will break my heart!!!

It's super economical to fly. I went from MO to NJ with a single stop. The IO-360 is very reliable and I burn about 8-9 gallons an hour. I fly around 7500-9500 depending on the winds.

Yes, it's slower, and much less useful load, but I don't mind the extra 5-6 minutes travel time.

I fly full tanks with 3 people in the winter plus about 25 lbs worth of stuff in the back. 3 people and half thanks in the summer.

Just watch out for DA and hot days... It's VERY slow climb, but once you get used it and know the capabilities of the airplane, just don't put yourself in the situation where you have to push the airplane...

112 are amazing airplanes!!! you will be very happy!
    Hello Marcos,
I ended up buying a 114. Coming up on annual in June. Any advice on first annual ? Do you use local FBO?

    Thanks

Hey Phil... the 114 is great!! I will eventually upgrade to one, but for now the 112 will do for my mission. For the first annual, I would pay attention to the electrical system. Get under that panel and make sure you don't see anything funny up there (or dangerous) ... I did a LOT of work on first annual (new interior, new panel, new carpet, new hoses, plugs, etc) 25K on the first annual... BUT if I was doing it again, I would have taken a different route.

The first annual we are all pretty enthusiastic about getting the plane the way you want it, but I wasted a lot of time and money changing stuff that really didn't need to be changed.

I have an A&P that works in MO and IL, but I am hesitant to recommend it... I did it in the past and it wasn't a good fit... he ok and very experienced, but not great. He is cheap, but takes FOREVER to get things done.

If I was doing it over I would:

Fix the squawks that needed to be addressed (there is always something)
Take everything apart and look for corrosion and deal with it if you find any (most commanders are pretty good)
Check all the hoses and see what needs attention.

If you don't have a good IFR panel, I would plan on doing that first.

    My 2 cents.
Hope your South American trip went well. How do I “post” a question to everyone ? I need to buy a new “Gear Down” limit switch.

    Thanks

Hey Phil.. it was great...the beach and the drinks were amazing!!

to post the question, on the main forum go to the parts wanted section and make a new post. Do you need the big squat switch?
bought a 114 yesterday. Flew from Cleveland to Carbondale IL yesterday morning: love the plane
    Cheers
    Marcos,

I was sitting down to design my own 90 degree adapter for the overheads and see you provided and STL. Thats very nice of you.

What hardware was that designed for? Dimension between screw holes?
I tried to open in OnShape and it does but i can't adjust anything.

Is yours a 114 or 112? Not sure if there is a difference.

Did you print these yourself? Did lay flat on the rectangular base and use supports? PLA or PETG?

    Thanks for all your work.

I made it shorter and longer versions... I actually like the narrow version better because I used it on my kneepad... the other half of the knee pad, I use it for writing.
Hi Marcos, whatever happened to the 112B that wings of hope or someone had in NM?
Did it get bought or parted?

    Thanks,

Hey Doug, Someone ended up buying it. I gave several names to the wings of hope people and the guy there said it was sold. Actually I didn't even get a thank you from them for trying to help sell it, which kind of sucked.
First off, why drive when you can fly? Second are you going to Oshkosh?

Hahaha... I don't have an airspeed indicator right now, so I am grounded. I sent my off to get it re-done. I had those big numbers put in but I think I must flew through moisture and there was a liquid inside, so it's off to the repair shop.

It will take a few weeks to get it back.

I don't know about Oshkosh, I am still working 12 hours day shifts and manpower here is sooooo short right now I may not be able to leave.

Is your 114 really non recoverable? I mean, can it fly again?
Hi Marcos - saw you were still in annual. where did you take it? I'm in Bolivar, Missouri (M17) My IA has done a couple of Commanders in addition to mine. Just curious who you took it to in STL region.k

Hi Kelly. I am currently at Creve Coeur, MO, just outside of Lambert and next door to Spirit (SUS). The annual is almost complete. The mechanic is finishing up the seats now.

I am having a heck of a hard time with my mechanic. His name is Jaime LaBlank. When I first met him (June last year) He promised me all kinds of stuff and seemed like he would be able a good fit for me and would take good care of my commander in a relatively fast time and reasonable price. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.

He replaces everything he touches, even though the stuff is ok. He makes up all kinds of imaginary rules to keep the airplane grounded so he can keep charging me. I am extremely safety conscious and I never want to have an accident, but he is something else. He does not live in the real world. He replaced my brand-new wheel bearings (less than 1 year old and signed off by another A&P/AI) just because it wasn’t the brand he liked it. I am at 12K now and I did most of the work as owner assisted annual. I bought new fuel pump, new interior, new plastics, new avionics, new seats, new fuel senders, all out of my own pocket and 12K was only for his labor, but I did most of the work.

Unfortunately, he is not honest either. One of the items on a recent bill is 8 hours for removing my gyro. I wanted my gyro to have a new look and I sent it for overhaul. I paid for the overhaul myself. 8 hours to remove 2 hoses and 4 screws? This is a 15-minute job which I would be happy to pay a full hour, but certainly not 8 hours.

I truly need to find a mechanic that I can trust and will take care of me and my commander.

Let me know if you can make the connection.

    Thank you.

    Marcos.

    Marcos,
Not sold yet. Took it off market for some fixes. Back on the market now with Barnstormers at lower asking price. Flies nice----now got FAA ADSB-out certification on Tail Beacon.

John, I was hoping to get my 112 sold, but I still need a couple more things done... it's not out the annual yet (we been working on the annual since July last year)

My plan was to sale my bird and buy your plane and flip it. But my mechanic wants too much money to overhaul the engine and I need to recoup all the money I invested on the 112 so far.

I might just break even on that. at the most, I will only loose a couple of grand.
Hello Marcos - thanks again for posting those labels in PDF you made up for your panel. That's a great resource for everyone. Do you have the source file for those available? I'm guessing you did it in Illustrator or similar and I'd love to be able to work with it in that format.

    Many Thanks,
