Hi all,

I’m new on the group, should’ve joined a LONG time Ago. The owner of ZS-OCO a 112tc based in South Africa. I learned my lesson about over boosting thus she is going in to get a new engine at 950 TTSN and a very sad time for me indeed. Fresh out of PPL and some other factors also contributing (Training) situation. They starting to work on her now again and can’t wait to get back into her! Doing ALL re-search possible and getting all advice possible. I’m also going to re-do interior and probably exterior as well depending on where the price takes us. I’m very happy to be on the group and have only learnt from mistakes and excited to learn from all other experienced pilot’s of our lovely a/c!

I’ve already read up a lot on other members personal way’s of engine management with the Turbo and will continue to do so.

I’m not to worried on a proper GPS at the moment but rather proper engine monitoring (Was thinking JPI930) or something but need some advice. I’m also looking into the GRT Engine monitoring as it has a remote option which you could use alongside the Levil app to have engine parameters on your tablet? But I would like to know if you can have both systems (maybe running of the same probes?) otherwise I’d obviously go with the JPI which has more reliability in terms if not getting a low battery as a Tablet? Any other recommendations or input’s will be GREATLY appreciated as I’m basically starting fresh in her.

Regards,
Jovan

Hi Jovan:
I have an EI, CGR 30P for my Commander. It replaces all other OEM gauges and is super accurate. I absolutely love it. Wouldn't look ant anything else.

atjudge I looked it up now looks like a super useful piece of equipment! Will definitely look into it more. Thanks.

Jovan,

I have the same thing - and I kept my factory analog group so that I have redundancy.

sshore atjudge Just asking to get most information, why rather go for the CGR 30P instead of the JPI say 900 or whichever? I would think a bit bigger and easy to use screen is better? And that's great to know that I can have multiple EIS running (I am thinking of obviously keeping the guages, the second will be the EIS (CGR/JPI), and then third I would like to get something that could deliver a remote EIS indication) Reason being is I'm going to use Ipad for a lot of reasons, I'm looking to install The Bom from Levil and thus having another backup, and then while having that you could run EIS on the app, and also probably will be running GPS app on split screen. And what do you recommend for Probes? Using the one's I've got in, or one's coming with the EIS or aftermarket one's. Thanks for the advice!!

I went with bigger is better. Removed all OEM instrumentation.
Would do JPI 930 over and over again. Purely a bigger display preference and i already had JPI probes from a previous install of the JPI 800. I am sure the CGR is equally functionally capable.

I went with what I had because I wanted to have primary certification AND keep my old analog gauges for backup. In regard to probes - you will have to go with new probes. The ones that your analog gauges will not work with the engine monitor. And besides, you only have one EGT and CHT probe anyway. The transducer for fuel flow and oil pressure / temperature will need to be compatible with your new electronic engine monitor.

I know I am over the top in regard to wanting redundancy and most people go with the primary engine monitor and lose the OEM analog gauges. You will be perfectly fine without them.

BTW: I literally have three fuel flow meters. I used to run out of gas in my cars when I was a kid. I think it scarred me.

Jovin: I went with the CGR because it fits right into a standard hole in the panel, so you dont need to rework the panel to get it to fit. I didn't keep the Old gauges, except for the MP/FP gauge as a backup. My Carb Temp guage had shorted out, try finding a new one of those. The Oil Temp gauge also didn't work, but I was using my Ei for Oil Temp, and so we had to source both those OEM gauges. This is an FAA approved replacement for all those gauges and I find it very easy to read. Because I have mostly round gauge panel, it fits right in. If I had a new modern panel Like Mozzam's I may have gone with his solution. I had new probes, and I'm glad I did. My old probes were telling me that at 75% power and 13 GPH my TIT was at 1700, so I was running over 13.5 to 14 and wincing every time I looked at the tit. .. With the new Probes, my TIT was showing in the very low 1600's. I now fly at 65% power at 10 GPH with a tit of 1650-1660....at 75% I'm burning 13 GPH at the same tit. those are Book numbers and well below the limits....Using 65% power I've been able to fly 5 hour and 45 minute flights, really getting some long legs out of the airplane. For Me, that means St Louis to Page AZ with only one fuel stop in Amarillo, (Unless the winter winds are really strong). So it's allowed me to really use the Aircraft to its full potential.......there's my two cents!!!

That’s a nice setup you have there, I would love to install a G3X but first priority is engine, Interior and Exterior and proper engine Monitoring. After that I will save up for nice GPS system I want to go glass but the prices are absolutely ridiculous, and here in SA we don’t really have all this other options, mostly Garmin. Will look into JPI and the other system a bit more, I’ve already got a JPI700 in which is a confusing instrument! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

See I have a JPI700 installed already and a EDM450 which is fuel flow as I think if you get a JPI900 or whatever it plugs into old JPI instrument? Below is my Dashboard layout, The GNS430 is removed. So I guess there is still a lot of research left on the different options!

Another option would be the G3X touch maybe the 7” Portrait EIS ($10795) or the 10.6”Landscape ($12795) very pricey but the benefit of the landscape will be that I now have a GPS also.

Yess that’s a benefit of the CGR system I guess that it fit’s inside a standard hole. But I will probably want to keep most of my original instruments possible, if it’s possible (why not). But I’m thinking of going for the GTR system for the remote option, and then later I will upgrade to CGR or JPI syst. Then I’ve got the current JPI and then the GTP for remote information.

I will be using my Ipad to fly for most part in the beginning until I can upgrade to a Glass system. So that might’ve be the best option for me at the moment? I don’t have GPS at the moment so that’s why I’m saying I will be operating with my Ipad and then also running The Bom with its backup systems?

Will do more research I’ve got a bit of time still so will get all info I can. Thanks for all the info!

regards.

Jovan, I struggled with this decision for a long time also. My decision was ultimately made by two factors; first, I didn’t want to spend large dollars on a whole panel revamp. Second, EI had a remarkable rebate on the CGR 30P &. CGR-30C combo at Airventure 2021. I’m having the tachometer removed along with the manifold pressure/ fuel flow gauges as a simple change. That will make the install simpler.

Hmm. Finally something you can get me behind - before all 100LL disappears from that continent. I've planned (on paper) multiple times renting in SA and flying up to Kruger.
The practical version of my trip had me island hopping the caribe instead

Completely get that! I think I'll have to spend more time on research and get different options lined up and then make choices. Thanks for info Sent from my MAR-LX1M using Tapatalk

You'll be welcomed with open arms, It will be amazing!!! Even if a few commander owners fly commercially here and rent some planes I will organize us a good time indeed Sent from my MAR-LX1M using Tapatalk

MUST organize something, Please speak to me before you do something like that. Kruger is an experience I guess but I can organize such better experiences as I know the place obviously. It's a bit like people only knowing NY but probably so much better places around the corner!! I tjink we can organize something amazing if few people interested! And maybe a Hunt or two for those wanting to! I want to come fly in USA soon! Heard it's also amazing Sent from my MAR-LX1M using Tapatalk

If you come to NY / North East - keep my contact info handy - Commander Owner or not.
