Hi from Texas

Re: Hi from Texas

Sunny

I am base on the east edge of Dallas in Terrell. Happy to let you take a look at the plane and take you for a ride.

Re: Hi from Texas

As this is a TX thread now :) - i plan on re-basing my airplane this winter in the DFW area (Jan-March). I usually head to Florida but looking to base in Texas this yr (work reasons).

DFW area airport and FBO hangar/tie-down suggestions ? Prefer DFW proximity as i 'll be flying commercial in and out of there

Re: Hi from Texas

More important is where you will live while you're here. Dallas is big, there are airports all over it.

KADS has no inexpensive fuel, but is the most accessible from multiple north Dallas areas. It depends on whether you don't mind stopping somewhere else for gas.

Love is a good option if you're going to be primarily in the city, it's technically municipal even though two airlines live there so no landing fee and it actually has the cheapest full service fuel around.

If you are going to be in Plano/Allen/Frisco (northeast to north central metro) then there are some private fields like T31 that are worth a look due to cheap space, but they will have no instrument approaches, mind you. Getting out of them is okay, getting back in is tricky if the clouds are below 1500 (which they can be in the spring).

KTKI is a good option if you're going to be living near it. It is accessible from the turnpike that goes to KDFW (about 20 miles away) and is a pretty good full service field, mine lives there. T hangars are 400/month at TKI, one of the smaller/private fields might be a hundred dollars a month cheaper or so.

I know someone looking to rent a house with a hangar attached for 1700/month at T31 if you're interested. The mechanic that takes care of our local Commanders is at T31 as well.

Re: Hi from Texas

Good info.

I was thinking instrument approaches a must.

I was thinking to just stay downtown, working in Irving but getting the airplane accessible and indoors is enticing.

Neal - i'd be open to exploring the hangar + house option. Assume they're ok with a "seasonal" rental till April ? Would probably see usage a couple of weekends/weekdays a month.

i'll also check out Love and KTKI.

Judi - when i am closer to retirement, i want to end up buying in an airpark. Florida and Texas are both high on my list. But too early for that :)

Re: Hi from Texas

I don't know the particulars of the house rental, he just brought it up to me the other day.

The owner is a corporate pilot and told me he wouldn't be able to use the house/hangar due to training over the next few months for a new type rating/client so was looking to rent it out. I know that the hangar is a square hangar for multiple airplanes, but his personal airplane is a 182 so there would be no problem having a low wing in there with it. He told me the house is four bedrooms but I don't know anything other than that.

If you just wanted to rent an apartment at T67 or T31 for those few months that might be your best bet. There are lots of those available typically.

You can get a cell phone clearance to depart IFR from these airports easily, but approach will only clear you to land at or above 1500 feet (limits of radio reception lower than that). I know at T31 people commonly accept approaches into KTKI and then when they break out, request permission from tower to break off the approach and land at T31 due to its proximity. As long as you have an obstacle display of some sort and can avoid the cell phone towers that works fine. Ground elevation around DFW is almost universally 500-600 feet.

Re: Hi from Texas

Thank you Neal

i'll start off with my plan A : Love field , followed by KTKI.
Failing those i'll explore T67 or T31.

i'll start making calls on Monday to see if i can find a hangar.
