Played a little bit of hooky earlier today… Widespread 600 & 1 - 3ish rn- to mod rn and no ice below 9K. Gusty surface 10 - 20 kt winds w/ 30-60kt veer at 3K. Mod chop between 2K – 4K. PERFECT day to go stooge in the goo for awhile.

No one up except a few corp/comm guys that had places to go and was able to zip off a handful of full approaches in a little over an hour. …and I do mean hand-full. A/P was of little use other than occasional wing leveler as winds were swinging back and forth 30 – 40 degrees @ 40-60kts @ 3K w/ 25-35 deg here/gone/backagain crab on a couple of the final approach courses so all were hand flown. No sharp jolts but still like being in a washing machine. A/P course tracking was hopeless. Hand flying average courses still invaluable in certain conditions. 15 - 20 kt windshears down final approach track. (The JPI was sending me frowny faces with all the throttle changes to hold glide slopes) Interesting watching some approach leg GS's in the 160kt range then turning to another @ 59 kts all w/ std airspeed/power settings. Good VS compensation practice...

Fortunately winds were in the 10 – 20kt range close to the ground so landings were engaging but not impossible. GREAT practice session even w/ the compass doing the hula for most of the trip. Partial panel would have been a grin today. (Glad no pax on board this time!)

Re: Wonderful day...

What fun! I would have liked to have been your passenger.

Re: Wonderful day...

Sounds like spar-cracking fun!!

Re: Wonderful day...

Yes bb3 that's what I like to do practice on tough days - good thinking & go practice

Re: Wonderful day...

Bill,

Sounds challenging and that's why it is fun.

I've been running up and back to Toledo a bit recently and have grown to appreciate how challenging the northern winters can be. Last week I flew from TOL back to NEW with a fuel stop in 2M2 in Tennessee. There was a front laying about 100 miles west of the ENTIRE route. As soon as I got up I was in the soup. Had a choice of go high and face possible ice or stay lower and face fierce headwinds of 40 knots at 3,000. Decided to try 12,000. Was still in soup and sure enough started to pick up some ice. Tops were reported over 20,000 so no better higher. Hung in for a little while to see if decrease/warmer as I headed south but by Cincinnatti ice was building so I started to look for lower. Ended up at 8,000 and ice departed but was making about 105 knots over the ground and bumping around in the turbulance.

IFR in heavy turb as I got lower into 2M2 and a quick turnaround and back up into it. As I headed south now had added issue of embedded thunderbumpers. Was held at 6,000 due to active MOA's and was being bumped all over the place. As I was approaching home there was a big thunder bumper between me and the field so had fly all the way over to GPT to get around the back of it and then instrument approach to 36R at 20G35 winds 35 degrees on the left. Broke out at 700' with a hell of a crab angle and couldn't immediately see the runway cos it was over to the right. Held the angle and sure enough was tracking right to it. Quick rudder kick at 2' above the concrete and touched down on centerline like it was a calm sunny day. Very gratifying after 7.5 hours of hard flying.

Thats why we practice this stuff, right?

Everyday in the air is great....
Some day's, when we get to see something like this, it's even better.

Re: Wonderful day...

One of my best days ... flying backseat in Lonnie's RANS last Sunday morning ... landing on random fields, flying at about 5 ft. of the river while winding around turn after turn ..average AGL for the trip was about 30' !!!! Like laying out your own roller coaster as you go. Such a riot ... I was LMFAO for more than an hour ... like a little kid ... when we finally set down, I was exhausted from laughing so hard with glee! Mr Toad's Wild Ride seemed like a walk down Sesame Street. Then Lonnie flew out next to me in the Super Commander about 30 minutes as I headed west to Houston in my bird. The highlight there was Lonnie doing a full power climb-out ... extremely steep and ... and ... was that a Chandelle? No ... no ... I am just kidding ... would not want the FAA to think ....

Re: Wonderful day...

Chandelles are required Commercial pilot maneuvers and are done well under 60deg bank or 30deg pitch so no prob channelling anywhere except class b or c else you'd violate altitude assignment

Re: Wonderful day...

LMFAO! You are dead right, Sid. Decidedly NOT a Chandelle. What was I thinking? At any rate, it was definitely not a 60 degree bank, so all is OK with the FAA.

Scott sure enjoyed the time in the Rans also. That plane sure is fun.

Re: Wonderful day...
