Yesterday I finally managed to visit Aerodyme/Jim and his wife and Tony. Having spoken with him many times on the phone And looking ahead to the future for what to do with my engine when it is overhaul time, I decided on a stopover in Burlington.
now first of all this is a great place to be.. A beautiful and warm lake with a lot of sailing but also really closeby the mountains where a lot of skiings is done (or better snowboarding).
Jim is almost fanatical in what he does and how wants to support the commander community. What really impressed me is the amount of engineering he does and the high attention for detail. I mean for us we just think of it as .. okay for the special parts we need to talk to Jim.. but the quality of the design and the work is phenomal.. For me this was the real eyeopener.
The supercommander was something entirely different. we went up in 555LP and Jim was throwing it around as if we were driving a Mini Cooper S (a very small car with much to much horsepower).
it definitely is more powerful then my tc and the take off roll is much shorter, however on the climb there will come a point where the tc will continue to climb faster then superc. I believe this will be somewhere around 7000feet. this was lower then i expected.
at lower altitudes the super is much faster.. it is a simple matter of a lot more horsepower.
what amazed me really was the ease of motormanagement. it responds very quick to more or less fuel making it very easy to fly at the right numbers. and you can just give it full power whenever you want...
climb angles are ridiculous for most passengers and slow flight ditto. Jim just hung it on 61kts and flew as stable and in control as it could be.
now for me the big thing will be.. will i make the step to the super in the future? the ease of powermanagement, the extra performance and capabilities but also a fuel consumption that is equal or higher (or lower when on economy cruise) compared to my tc which will just keep on climbing and climbing and climbing with a normal cruise/climb setting of 30/24 (where the max is 39/2575). the speed difference is about 10kts and only when you let the super run for what it is worth.
when we were back on the ground after Jim did a very short circuit maneuvre with max all speedbreaks out
.. a trick i do quite often when coming from a high speed descent... we talked about the good and great of the superc.
i really love her but I would definitely want some kind of turbonormalizer or supercharger to make her what se really should be at altitude. Jim fancies the idea of an electric on off switch supercharger .. apparently because that makes certification a lot easier. Now that would be fantastic.. and it would bring the 200kts within range.
I trully hope you get it done Jim !!
