Trip to see the Eclipse 8/21/2017

Re: Trip to see the Eclipse 8/21/2017

I heard that at least one airport in NE that is normally uncontrolled has had to set up a temp tower to handle all of the traffic, and is asking flight service to start rejecting flight plans because they are going to be out of ramp space.

Temporary towers in both Bend and Madras. I was at Bend today and it did not look too busy. Most everyone is in Prineville or Madras. A lot of fires here in central Oregon and that may have dampened the mood a bit for flying in. There at least 4 TFR's in the area.

I tel-a-commute from Tn working for ODOT. I work on some of their software used to manage acft registration for Oregon. They expect over 1mil people to come in the state. ODOT is worried the infrastructure will not be able to handle it.

Michael, I don't think that the huge crowds are going to pan out. The fires here have been really bad, with lots of smoke and poor visibility. I know ODOT has been planning for the huge crowds (wisely so), but we are not going to have any where close to a million folks here.

Sorry about the fires. It seems like an annual occurrence out there. I had to contend with them on one of my trips. They are expecting big crowds north of Nashville. I have canceled going to several airport along the center of the path due to the crowds. I am now going to John Tune (KJWN) instead. Which does not seem to have as much traffic coming in.

Btw: picture of the 3 sisters on one of my trips.

Pretty cool event...

I expected it to be darker though.

Same here - some of our photo cell lights came on but it really wasn't all that dark.
What was interesting is that you could see the change in the Sun/Moon eclipse by looking at the shadow of the leaves on the asphalt. Very interesting.

We were in the 100% track of the eclipse. We had on and off showers most of the day. Didn't see much with the cloud cover, but it got dark. It was light at 1:00 and 1:05 it's dark as if it was 10:00. It was the strangest thing to see to all the lights come on in the middle of the afternoon.
