I'd like to return to OSH in 2023 but can't find anywhere to stay for 4 days that doesn't cost at least $500 per night - even in Appleton! Does anyone have a place that they usually stay, which may have a room or two to rent? I'm not into camping... any recommendations appreciated!

Carol, I only camp once a year and it’s @ Airventure.
Years ago my father in law traveled with me and we rented rooms from a family over on Lake Winnebago. We had arranged it through the EAA. They have a dedicated phone line for housing assistance. This might work for you, however there is the issue of transportation to and from the show.
The older I get the less I want to sleep on an inflatable air mattress, but I’m trying not to get old! Especially since I have invested a lot in camping equipment, right down to the single burner stove and the Bialetti for my morning espresso, and the traveling corkscrew for a glass of California’s finest in the evening!
Best of luck with your room search!

IMG_3432.jpg I went camping for the first time in thirty years, a fly in at Triple Tree in SC. First thing that I did when I got home was to purchase a tent I could stand up in. One I can walk in without getting on my hands and knees. An air mattress too big to roll off in the night. I am wanting some creature comforts.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken, notice that my tent is as high as the horizontal stabilizer… this is my third tall tent!
Love Triple Tree in September! I was there in 2017, I forgot to put my sleeping bag in the plane, so I slept wrapped up in my brand new felt lined canopy cover!
Hopefully my wife won’t plan another vacation during September, the best month of flying weather again this year! I get more excited about Triple Tree than Oshkosh, and that’s only 200 miles away!
See you there!

I’m going again this year, but I scored a room at the Hotel on the field. Unobtainium…and the corresponding Unobtainium price.

Hampton Inn in Fond Du lac. $400 a room, still have some available with rental cars at the airport.

Thanks to all who responded! Hope to see you at OSH 2023.

Looking forward to OSH 2023...

Yep, I’ll be there for at least a day or two. Camping can be tough, perfect weather helps.

I stayed at an INN on Green Lake about 20 years ago. It is 25 miles southwest of Oshkosh (35 min drive). I just now googled Inn's, B and B's and Hotels in Green Lake and a couple came up with good prices. The cheapest I saw was The Dartford Inn..... shows a room rate of $65 during Airventure.

I lived in Milwaukee as a kid and started attending Airventure in 1977. My family is from Wisconsin and I used to stay with them. For the past 15 years my wife and I stay at Camp Scholler in our motor home all week on a site with electric and water hook ups. It is expensive but really worth it to us to be on the grounds 24/7 and have a comfortable place to stay with our own bathroom. Makes a huge difference on a hot day....we go back to the motorhome and rest in the air conditioning for a couple of hours.....

In the future an option is to contact RV dealers within 50 miles of Oshkosh. Several of them bring in a couple of hundred travel trailers. You can rent them for the week. They are all set up so you don't have to do anything to them. But those are usually all rented by January. As far as car rentals, they book up at all the airports from MKE to GRB. But one year I called Enterprise in Waukesha at the last minute and they had plenty of cars. Seems if you go to rental lots that are not at the airports then car rentals are not a problem.

If you have a lifetime EAA membership, my wife and I do, a nice perk they started last year was they converted one of the EAA stores across from the Brown Arch to an air conditioned lounge with free food and drinks and lots of tables and chairs to relax in. Really a nice deal for lifetime members.

I’ve never done the hotels or dorm room options near Oshkosh. It seems there is always cancellations & openings, life happens. One may not like the price, but if you keep an ear to the ground. I’ve camped a few times, or just scooted home.

The last few years I’ve been bringing people, mostly relatives. Last years group wants to go again, including the two nieces in high school. With the larger group it’s been driving, usually on the way back from the Western U.P. of MI.
