Hello all,

Recently I've been doing a lot of research on the Commanders, especially the 114s as I am looking to upgrade from my Piper Cherokee. The strange thing, is that living in the birthplace of the Commanders, these are very hard to see in the wild. So far everything I've read about these birds is great, however, the fact that I've never seen one, let alone fly one, is a bummer. So, is anyone here in central Oklahoma, or Oklahoma in general, and is willing to let me look at their plane up close, and ask a whole lot of questions....and maybe take me around the pattern?!

Thanks in advance guys,
Alex

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Welcome Alex. I'm sure someone from your area will chime in about getting you up in the air in a Commander. In the meantime, feel free to throw out any questions here. And also check out our FAQ if you haven't already seen it.

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Thanks Glenn,
I read the FAQs, and as much information as I can get my eyes on!

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

(3) 114 owners right there, Alex, and all good owners. ..I'm sure they'll chime in.

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

They still have Second Officers????

Second Off reminded me of; "Many" years ago we were sitting in our pilot's hooch when one of our very junior pilots got a call from his irate wife. Seems she was just ticketed by the M P's for illegal parking. She received a ticket for parking in the Gen Officer's reserved parking. She tried telling the MP's that her husband was just a 'general' officer :o - - that didn't fly . . .

Hello Judi,
I say 114 for the performance aspect, but in reality, even seeing a 112 in person would be great.

Alex,

I get into KOUN fairly often-ish.... will post or connect with you when I do. It'll probably be around April though.

Don't you mean state of the art 717's? I crewed this one for awhile.: http://www.boeing.com/news/frontiers/archive/2006/july/i_history.pdf

It's now on a pogo stick on McConnell AFB. Welcome to the group!

Nope, I mean 707s, also known as AWACS.

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Alex,

I'm coming up on 8 years, my first shot at ownership, with a 1978 114. I did the same thing you are doing, did my homework, developed my personal mission statement and found a local 114 owner then coordinated a static up and close with dozens of questions. The following week I was on my way to N. Carolina an as they say, the rest is history.

Being a previous owner, the acquisition process will not be strange / new to you. Seemed like the week I closed on 114JA was a big blur. With the help of a 'very nice lady in Fla' the process was much more streamlined and far less painful.

So, lessons learned;
Avionics- Took the better part of my first six months with the plane sitting in the shop getting modernized to a basic IFR platform standard.
B-Model envy- Seems like every opportunity that comes along I attempt to modernize the old gal with the latest update. (takeaway- if you can swing $$ a B-Model / maybe TC I'd recommend going that route) Hey!! nothing wrong with our earlier models, most are low time compared to your Piper friends.
Parts - have not been a problem at all. The factory in Norman is slowing spooling up and are selling parts on a limited basis as we speak.
Insurance - So far very to semi-reasonable.

Good luck with your search, like others have offered - throw those questions out there, great bunch of folks here in the COG.

Best,
John

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Hi Alex,

I have a '77-114 at Wiley Post (KPWA) and I would be happy to show. I had the same issue a few years back when I was looking. I will send you an email.

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Aw, totally forgot about the 300 series. I shouldn't have though, since the Tanker I mentioned earlier was stationed at Tinker at the time I was on it. Lots of those Frisbees there at that time.

Nope, I mean 707s, also known as AWACS.

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Would have loved to have flown that airplane, in any of it's variants (707, 717, 720, 135). Still the best looking Aircraft Boeing every built, Followed closely by the 747.

Thanks for your inputs, John

I believe all my research had led me to believe that the 114 is the right plane for me. I'm willing to trade 10-15 knots for a much more comfortable ride, as compared to the competition. As far as the "B" model, I can't afford that, but maybe in 10-20 years I'll be able to afford a shiny 2019/20ish(?) model!

Hey Dean,

Taking some time to look at the forum and seeing your message, I remember you being from Colorado. Well, from looking at your sig, I now realize that more specifically you are at FTG! Well, I flew in there last week from HSD. Gotta say, that flight definitely reinforced the desire for a Commander. The Cherokee 140 was not happy at all as I was leaving the airport. I wish I had realized that you were there before I flew up. Do you know when you'll be in Oklahoma next?

Re: Oklahoma based Commander?

Alex, did you ever get to look at a Commander in Oklahoma?
