Folks,

I have been thinking of flying the NYC vfr corridor this fall. Anyone done this and want to tag along? I have not, and think I would enjoy it more with an extra set of eyes. Maybe a few of us could do it as a mini fly in. I'm taking my commercial ticket late Oct, so sometime after that.

Thoughts?

Re: Ny vfr

Hi Elliot,
It is a great trip and is surprisingly easy to manage. There is an FAA online course you must take first, gives you the needed merit badge to fly the corridor. The politicians changed the rules a couple of years back in response to a copter/Cherokee collision hence the online review. More altitude restrictions and mandatory radio verbiage (which I've never heard anybody use since most couldnt tell the Goldman Sachs building from FAO Schwarz anyway) are part of the changes.
Spectacular views and scenery, well worth the trip. I take flight friendly visitors whenever possible, always a highlight of their stay.
Let us know when you plan to make the trip. A number of the NECOGers in the area, we can make it a convoy.

Re: Ny vfr

I have flown the Hudson river many times, but have never flown in the SRFA and never would. You should fly the Skyline route, which is in the bottom of the Class B. The SRFA is full of helo traffic and is all self-announce.

I would be happy you go with you when you are here.

Oh Todd, you're such a turbine guy! :D

Re: Ny vfr

I used to fly the VFR corridor a lot- each visitor to NY wants to do it.
Bravo clearance is the way to go. Folks are very accommodating.

Did the NYC corridor a few times, it's a lot of fun. Another good one that I have done many times is the Boston city tour, at 1000 ft or bellow, start at Masspike intersection with 128' all the way to Fenway and Back Bay and breakout north or south over the coastline or return the same way you got in. Not a VFR corridor, but Boston controllers are very accommodating, I never got denied entry into the Boston bravo yet. I have even done flight of two once into Boston with another former commander owner with a 112 as well.

Re: Ny vfr

I wrote a 12 page 'poem' after 9-11, detailing the family aviation legacy which is NYC based, and1980's flight down the Hudson AT NIGHT with my Long Island Flight Instructor OLDER Cousin (Passed in '98) who was influenced by my father (Army Air Corp Pilot mechanic 1926/1929}, later Radio Engineer for the Signal Corp (WW2) and USAF/RADC/Griffiss AFB upstate NY , 1950's) which we talked about our common Upstate NY childhood legacies!

I will bring copies of the poem to French Lick. Will leave one at A3 tomorrow for you!
Last year, as part of a 9-11 Commemorative Art Show, Camellia and I turned the poem into a Collaborative piece of Art.
