I plan to drop by Hartford, CT on Sunday and visit some friends who work for Pratt & Whitney. Then on to Nantucket Is for the day and overnight in Maine. Next day NH and then back to KY. I really welcome suggestions on:

What to see in Nantucket, recommended city in Maine ( thought of flying North over ocean east of Boston), and then a recommended stop in NH after Maine. I welcome any and all ideas. I'm by myself on this trip as my wife doesn't want to talk jet engines and fly over water. Thanks for any help.

Hi Michael,

Bar Harbor is nice in Maine.

Michael,

Nantucket is great to see by air. Once on the ground the downtown is where most people head. There's a whaling museum there, the oldest house on the island, and the old Mill. Usual antiques, shopping and dining. Last time I was there for dinner I stopped at La Languedoc which is downtown. Expect lots of crowds at the airport and downtown.

As Jim mentioned, Bar Harbor is very nice in Maine. I also like Wiscasett - home of Red's (Great NE seafood). Flying up the coast along the islands is a beautiful trip and there are some neat small airports to stop and stretch at. The best fly-in breakfast in the area is at Sandford (SFM) on your way northward.

In southern NH I get over to Lake Winnipesaukee (LCI) fairly often to visit friends who have a cottage on the lake. Not much right around the airport although it's a nice flight. A car would get you to Wiers beach or Alton Bay (can usually rent boats here).

If you've got time to get further north, North Conway has a terrific rail tour that lasts about 3-4 hours travelling up to Crawford Notch. Spectacular scenary and very enjoyable. North Conway no longer has an airport and I think the closest is now Fryberg ME. Nothing there so call ahead to arrange a car.

Great time to fly up here - have a good trip.

This is exactly the info I wanted. I've only flown into Burlington and never the other states. I'm still on schedule to leave Sunday morning.

I agree that Bar Harbor, ME (BHB) is a great place to fly. Gorgeous flight up the "rocky coast of Maine" and a beautiful airport adjacent to one of many bays in the area. A free bus, sponsored by LL Bean will take you from the airport to downtown Bar Harbor in about 50 minutes (it stops at several campgrounds along the way). Eastport (EPM), at the easternmost point in the US is also a great destination.

Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard both have a restaurant at the airport and an inexpensive bus to town.

Sanford (SFM) has a very popular restaurant (Cockpit Cafe) on the field and is about 20 minutes from some of the best beaches in New England.

Have a great trip. The weather this upcoming week looks nice.

Nice try Dana but your slight against Alaskans won't work especially since many a Commander has taken part in 2 or more group fly-ins to Alaska!
There are several islands and airports in Alaska that have 176 E to even 179E longitudes making them the Easternmostpoints in the US! There an Airforce station SYA or PASY with 176E as its cordinate!

OK COGers what do I wing for nailing him for his Maine blatant bias?
