My chance at "The impossible turn"

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

I've been NORDO for awhile doing lots of other things but Bill, what firewall reinforcing brackets?

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Early Commanders were prone to cracking in the firewall around the outside engine mounts from fast taxi turns. Robin Miley had developed an STC bracket reinforcement that would be added from inside the cockpit and rivet into place into the firewall and sidewall.

You can spot Commanders that have the bracket by an extra vertical row of rivets just aft of the firewall right at engine mount height.

I'd assume at this point that Carl Lee has that kit available?

good point, Glenn. here's a pic fm 82J some years ago showing the doubler area and add'l. row of rivets.

What didn't crack on early Commander's? (Just kidding)

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Many of the 112s I've looked at over the years have cracks there. Some are stopped drilled, some not. I don't believe it's a problem with later years because of a change in the engine mount arrangement, but I'm not sure.

Any 114 drivers out there with cracks or the brace in that area?

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Just some clarification, but Robin didn't have an STC for the bracket(s), but he did make them and sell them. He copied the design off of what they did on later production aircraft.

Like Brad said. Port side stiffener was most important to prevent/stop firewall tearing adjacent to port upper motor mount attach bolt. There is a second angle for a different location on the starboard side but that appears to be less important as apparently damage did not appear in that location on the 112's but the bracket appears on the 114 firewalls so Robin included it in the kit. So the story goes...

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

You may be right Brad. I thought there was some paperwork involved but it's been quite a few years at this point.

Robin provided a title blocked Commander drawing showing the installation and supporting same as "current" production technology and approved data in case an AP or IA balked.

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

That's good news then as it makes it that much easier for owners that need the fix to get it done. Carl, do you have any of these kits in your pile of stuff that you got from Robin?

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

I'll check mine this weekend, but I don't remember any paperwork with them, like a CAC drawing. I have them, but not installed.

It's been awhile since install, but I'll look around for the old drawing.

Re: My chance at "The impossible turn".

I believe i have the drawings that came with the kit Robin sent me a few years back. I'll look.
