Anyone based here or have any suggestions as to a good FBO for an overnight,

There is surprisingly little info on the usual sites - Airnav-AOPA

Thanks

Hi Joel. I can't think of FBO at TOA, but they have Transient parking for over-nighters. Were you looking for a hanger or tie-down?

Re: Info on Zamperini/Torrance KTOA

Tie Down is fine. I just didn't want to get caught in the unexpected ramp fee quagmire. Some FBO's are getting pretty unreasonable these days, especially to transients. My arport charges non locals .40 cents more a gallon. Unconscionable to do so.

Re: Info on Zamperini/Torrance KTOA

I'm checking on the fees and should have an answer by Monday. When will you be arriving?

Re: Info on Zamperini/Torrance KTOA

Will be there next weekend - Monday is fine and thanks for the help. I am surprised that such a busy airport has almost no comments or info on the usual sites. Small airports like Hii have 50 or more comments. TOA must be very unremarkable.
Stats show 55% of their traffic is transient so I was surprised at the lack of info.

Re: Info on Zamperini/Torrance KTOA

One reason that the info is so scarce may be the lack of a cafe on the field. There's no reason to go there other than to shoot the ILS of visit the Robinson Heli factory. Most others land, get a clearance and depart.

Joel: Just checked on Airnav about GYR and no mention of the .40 more for transients, just 4.29 for 100LL. How do they differentiate? Is this Lux Air or the local Airport commission? Stuff like this ought to be posted on Sites like Airnav to keep the pressure on the prices..

On a trip cross country to the Bahamas this year I found that this is becoming common practice. I ran into it in Florida and New Mexico. I only found out about it when I balked at the fuel prices and they said they would give me the LOCAL price.
The prices listed on the sites are the transient prices but as in the case of my airport they give a .40 cent discount to locals. I guess they just know who is based there or provide the discount when called out to a hangar to do the fill.

Personally I think this practice stinks. Everyone should get the same price. Another reason to use 100ll.com or airnav when planning a long trip.

Re: Info on Zamperini/Torrance KTOA

Yes Joel, I religiously use Airnav and plan all my Cross Countries accordingly. I'll even land a few miles short to fill up and then continue on to the destination. .40 cents/gallon over 50 gallons will cover the tie down fees for a couple of days. I've never bought a drop of Gas at my Home base of CPS as they charge 4.99/gal, and you only get a dicsount if you buy a large quantity for use later, they keep track over time. Meanwhile I have two airports within 40 miles of me that are curently selling 100LL for 3.76. I can fill up there, fly back, and put the commander away with 65 gallons in the tank for the next flight. Somtimes it pays to be "thrifty". From now on I'm gonna start asking for the "Local price" when ever I'm away from base.

On the subject of fuel prices in SoCal, if coming from the East, the best self-serve prices will be at RIR followed by AJO. Great food at RIR too.
