Hi all.

I have a show to play in Dec up there and will be flying.

STP seems like a very nice airport and much like mine in LOU.

Any experience with it?

Thanks

You'll have to look up (COG members) Rolf and Ann Ringgold. They are based there, super people.

Re: Kstp

I used to fly out of KSTP years ago. It's a nice airport and located very close to downtown ST. Paul. The FBO's think rather highly of themselves and charge accordingly. If you don't mind driving about another 15 minutes to downtown look at KSGS. It is about 6 miles due south of KSTP and fuel will be cheaper.

Thanks Randy! Good call. 1.70/g cheaper there :D and I don't mind the extra drive at all.

Re: Kstp

KSGS was one of my detours on the way to Fort Collins.

There was some sort of fund-raising event going on, so what I gathered was the usual parking ramp was roped off. The only remaining spots were on the tall, unmowed grass. The tie-down hooks on the straps they have would not fit the Commander tie-down rings, so it was a good thing I had my own ropes. However, because of the distance to the rings I had to cobble up a tie down using my ropes and the straps they provided. Being in the grass, make sure you have some help to move the airplane, or as I do now, a battery powered portable tug.

I arrived on a Sat afternoon and not a soul came out to ask me how long I was staying. Someone did drive by in a car and appeared to write down the tail number, but he didn't say a word or acknowledge my presence. Likewise, on Sun morning when I left there was hardly anyone around except for the folks at the event marshaling cars. I taxied to the self-serve and departed shortly afterwards. The self-serve has 100LL and MoGas pumps right next to each other. Choose wisely.

The arrival to KSGS for landing on Runway 16 is a VERY tight fit to the Class D to the north, and the Class B overhead. Apparently the Class D folks are very sensitive to people busting their airspace. Be prepared for a very tight downwind, base, and final turn if the winds are favoring 16.

Since there was nobody there I don't know how they handle rental cars. The hotel nearby (Holiday Inn Express) has a shuttle that I called for, and in the morning I used Uber (the shuttle was busy).

Good call outs Frank. Thank you.

Re: Kstp

I operate my 114 out of KSGS and haven't had much of a problem with the Class D at STP, they've never seemed to bother anybody at KSGS much. There is an east-west freeway to the north of runway 16 that gives a good "base-leg" for 16, it'll keep you well clear of STP's airspace. It looks more ominous on the charts than in reality.

Sorry I didn't see your plane on the airport Frank, I was working in the hanger that day and could have put you inside. We have a new airport manger along with his "little general" assistant who has the personality of a stump. That's probably who drove by in the airport car.

The base of Class B is 2300 feet over the airport, but goes up to 3000 about 3 miles east of the field. If you use rwy 34 a standard downwind will keep you out of MSP Class B, and they also have been fairly reasonable about traffic getting close the to boundary.

If you land on rwy 34 with a west wind, plan to land a little long - the trees on the west side of the runway tend to cause a little disturbance action right by the numbers. Nothing big, but just something to be aware of.

Re: Kstp

I’ve been into many airports that seem vacant and many that are busy. I just assume it’s a matter of timing on my part. I go into KSGS once a year at least for my annuals and to visit
friends. I haven’t had any issues with the airspace above, it’s an easy in and out from the east. I’m wondering if there was a Young Eagles flight the day Frank was there.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this airport.

Jason, pm me and I will give you my phone number. I’d like to know more about the show.
Perhaps I can shed some light your way about St Paul.

Hi Rolf...sounds good.

I know the area fairly well i.e. played their several times.

We are playing 2 shows...one big one at Wilebski's and then another on Sat night at a smaller club but ridiculously packed club :D

Come out and see me if you can.
