Hi Gang, I picked up a new in box Garmin VIRB Elite for $ 275 on eBay and fashioned a mount out of aluminum angle bracket and a 1/2" bolt and wing nut that allows it to mount to any of the three tie down loops under the aircraft.

Super easy to use, control from the iPad to start/stop and LOVE the built in GPS and info that it allows you to overlay on the video. Free software for Win/OSX that is way easy to use.

Here is my second day out with the camera. First day out was attached to the headliner and too much wobble. In this video, the first leg is mounted at the tail tie down and the second flight is out on the port wing.

Basic effects like speed adjust, text, GPS data overlay and music and then click to upload to Youtube.

The VIRB has a built in view screen and the GPS so I think it gives the GoPRO a run for the money.

Take a peek. Tony

Tony

I have been doing something similar with a Drift HD170 camera.

Here is a link to a trip few weeks back over the Grand Canyon.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Very cool. Can definitely see if the landing gear is up or down!

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Joel, wow that is beautiful scenery ! Can you cut the audio with your editing software to eliminate the wind blast ? On the VIRB you can either turn it off on the camera directly, via the IOS app or fade it out with the software.

I have a couple of tools that I use to clip videos and they will also allow me to insert music over the noise. Just didn't bother on that one. Can also add sub titles and banner pages.

This is way too cool.
This should be on every plane coming to the FlyIn.

We need another Commander trip to Alaska.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Nice video you guys and Tony the speed and altitude pointers are excellent being recorded on the display, and Tony watch your wheels on the first landing after touchdown!!! Nice tool by the way to see if your gear is down if a panel gear light is out too...

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

These cameras are totally cool! I see a Christmas/birthday present coming my way!

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Tony, Does the Garmin VIRB have the ability to send video to a remote source, e.g. an iPad or other device via WiFi or Bluetooth?

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Joe, yes. I am able to watch the video via WiFi on my yoke mounted iPad as well as control the camera. Once it starts to record, the video feed to the iPad drops but you can still control it. The VIRB also has Garmins ant+ technology to control it from the Garmin watch and other toys.

If you are going to use it in the cabin, get the prop filter for $ 50 bucks from Spruce. There is a nice intercom interface cable as well to jack into the action on the radio.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Nice image quality on both.

Oh man, would there have been some amazing video from that trip, or what...!

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Birdstrike,
Just think. If there were videos, especially with altitude show, it would hard to deny that they happened.

I enjoyed your video, Tony. Could you post a picture of your fabricated mount to help me visualize it? I ordered a Garmin VIRB Elite based on your post and can't wait until it is delivered on Friday! :D

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

The Copyright gods got me for using Botticelli music in the video.

I am uploading another copy with a less known artist and it should be available in about a half hour.
