Future engine

Re: Future engine

Allen,

The engine sounds fine, but, every arrangement I've seen of a water cooled radiator in general aviation is downright ugly...

Re: Future engine

I doubt they have figured out a way to improve the SFC of the Wankel. Mazda sure hasn't. This means it remains a compact, lightweight powerplant with terrible fuel economy.

Re: Future engine

I'm thinking the extra fuel flow will be offset by the cheaper cost of Mogas and a 3000 hour TBO. No doubt there's going to be alot of work needed on the cowling system to get the airflow through the radiators. Maybe a cooling scoop underneath the belly aka it's bigger cousin the P-51...

Re: Future engine

Sounded like the 230HP variant in their testbed Arrow was pretty successful. That might be a very nice option for the 112's in the group. Hasn't been much said lately. Funding issues? Lots of press releases and the like in '05 and '06 then relatively silent. Subsequent problems w/ the Arrow?

Re: Future engine

New engine's are also a gamble. Look at the 580. Cessna passed on the 580 because of early problems, but it looks like those problems have been solved and so far it's been a nice engine for those that operate it. The theilert engine still has problems and it been in production for how many years now?? Just never can tell if an engine is a great one or not until you get a few years operation going.... Oh well, until then the trusty TO-360 keeps on soldering on...

Re: Future engine

The TO 360 still works right until the Turbo fails or you have to overhaul o/a 1600 hours.... I'm saving for a 580!
