Have plans to fly into ktex (Telluride), this weekend, elevation 9,100 feet or so. Anyone been in there? I regularly fly in and out of ksow, which is at 6,412 with no issues. Any thoughts?

Re: Flying into Telluride

You've got the right airplane for it. Just check the charts to make sure it says you can do it. Remember at 10,000 feet you're true airspeed is gonna be higher, so even though you have the full 210 horsepower, you're gonna be running down the runway maybe 20 knots faster than the airspeed indicator says you're going. At 70 knots indicated you'll be doing 90 knots true. No problem as long as the charts say it's safe, it is.

Joel, I'm in Cortez, CEZ, let me know if stop 602 359 1461. Only driven to Telluride, many times, have a safe trip.

Do the calcs before going. Not a massive runway. Recently reworked but very ugly if you overrun. Sits up on a bluff. Could become like a leadville. Depending upon time of day, you may not be able to leave once you arrive.

Thanks Pete. Going to Ouray for a few day's and then back down to Show Low so I probably won't get a chance to stop in Cortez, but if things change I will call.

Re: Flying into Telluride

Ouray is one of our favorite stops. We like Box Canyon Hotel with the natural hot tubs. Have a great time.

Re: Flying into Telluride

I've flown into Telluride three times but in a 182 with the Continental 310 hp stc. We flew right over the 14K peaks at 16,500 direct from Alamosa VOR. I have no mountain training and as such made sure the winds aloft were less than 15 knots. The regional airlines don't land with a 15 + crosswind there so I was very cautious. It was wonderful but my experience of mountain flying made my minimums high with little winds.

If you land to the west keep the left base tight due to noise abatement. The airport was closed all last summer to level the airport. It is excellent now, on top of a plateau. On takeoff, you will climb though the mountains very slowly! I flew non turbo 1039J to Colorado last year but drove from Denver. A cool day, no wind, and caution is my advice.

Free gondola and a great community. My favorite mountain stop.

Re: Flying into Telluride

Thanks Juergen - I have come to the conclusion that Montrose is the more prudent alternative and a similar drive time to Ouray. I think Bills comment about getting in and not being able to get out put me over the edge. I hadn't considered Montrose, as I didn't realize it was so close. By the way the performance charts show that TO from Telluride even in warm weather should only require 1/2 the runway length (7,000' runway) but we all know how optimistic the numbers can be.
