Over the past 2 weeks Avgas appears to have jumped around 10% at most of the UK airfield pumps I use. I'm regularly paying GBP1.71 per litre, that's around $13.00 per US Gallon or 2.16 Euros per litre. I would hate to think I'm over flying airfields with great deals on Avgas. I thought members in Europe, who seem to have a bit of a problem with fuel costs at the moment, could use this forum to alert each other to where the best Avgas prices are to be found. It could make for some interesting changes to the regular flight plans. Taking GBP1.71 per litre as a base, why not post good and bad deals, a "go-to" and "avoid" list. Please mention the ICAO code for the airfield, the price per unit, currency and date you actually saw the price being offered. You may also want to mention any airfields which have no fuel available even though it's advertised in the usual flight guides.
To keep it all nice and legal, remember that this list will be just friendly member to member discussion and the accuracy should not be relied upon in any way for any purpose.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

You're making us look like cry babies over in the US. I can't stand the $5+ dollars a gallon we have been seeing at most places. I'm even starting to believe that when I find avgas for less than $5 I am getting a good deal. Car gas is starting to drop, maybe avgas will follow.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Lawrence,

I was told that Alderney in the Channel Islands is at £1.15 per litre, its almost worth the 2 hour journey to fill up there.

What about flying to Calais and then you can also claim the fuel drawback (20% I think) on exported fuel.

Andrewsfield in Essex is also £1.77 a litre.

I found this page http://tmdg.co.uk/misc/fuel.php which is useful, although I am not sure how up to date it is.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Guys

£1.71 is cheap I have been paying about £1.80 for the last month (homebase and southend on a quick hop to France). I am cuurently using the VAT drawback approach to try to get the costs down.

I occassionally have acces to some RAF airfields and their fuel prices but not often.

Lawrence,

You need in Europe the equal of this website for the USA that shows 100LL prices for most airports in our country. Some GPS systems also can show the cost for fuel and helps when traveling for sure.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Ok everyone, we're off to a good start, 1 day and some useful information.
John, the price survey is a little out of date at some airfields but If we all report into this forum as we travel around we can build this type of information for the places we normally go. Alderney sounds like a mission to find out if the price is true. I could just phone, but where's the fun in that!
Matt, thanks for the info, where's your home base?
Drawback is a good option if you intend to travel into the continent, although the further you are based from the Channel the less likely you are to make a saving if it is the only reason you travel there. Remember that you need to keep records of your drawback transactions for 6 years.
I'll be fuelling at Coventry, Cumbernauld, Wolverhampton and Earls Colne over the next two weeks, I'll let you know what I can get.
An appeal to our friends in continental Europe. Please let us know what you are paying for Avgas as you travel. Ultimately I would like to publish an economic flight planning guide for the whole of the continent.
Thanks again and keep the prices coming in.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Just a thought, has anyone managed to get a volume discount on Avgas anywhere in Europe? Have you ever asked for one? Have you ever seen a fuel loyalty scheme anywhere? You can get a volume discount for landing fees, I have a loyalty card which gets stamped every time I land at Kemble, why not for fuel?

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

We are off on holiday at the end of the month doing some touring around Europe / UK; so I will keep records of locations and prices and let you know.

I like the loyalty card idea, however I have not heard of one for aviation fuel, if anyone did it I would guess it would be Shell.

We should ask Mike Perry in Guernsey for some information, he goes to more airfields than anyone I know and would certainly know about all the Channel Islands.
I might be talking to him today on another matter so I will ask him.

Good idea this Lawrence ;)

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Coventry Fuel Price - EGBE 07/08/08 £1.35 plus VAT.
This is the lowest I have seen for a long time, apparently they have a number of larger piston aircraft based there and they buy in large quantities. It was £14.10 for the landing. They have landing discounts if you take a quantity of fuel.

When posting prices, for the rest of stateside---put in the dollar value as well so we realize how lucky we are.

Hi John,
At first I thought that wasn't too bad, until I realized they are talking price per liter!
Yes, as bad as it has gotten here, we still have it pretty good!!
