Thanks to those who voted in the poll, the winning destination was Cannes, however we should be able to accommodate Montpellier in the route also.
The purpose of this flyout is to have some fun, a holiday with some flying with friends, rather than a flying holiday. If you like the route we agree, then fly along with it, however if you want to go a different way then by all means do so, you're the captain!
Ideally it would be good to get the group together for at least a couple of evenings in the same place.
Having done a few of these French tours, I have always found it best not to plan accommodation in advance and sort it out on arrival, this avoids spending half the day rearranging the bookings when the fog descends. I have never had a problem getting quality accommodation on the day. To make things easier I have proposed a routing which keeps to major airfields with English speaking ATC. This also means that there is ample accommodation nearby. However if those coming would like me to arrange a hotel for a couple of nights in Cannes in advance for a specific date where we can all stay and perhaps have some activities, post your comments here.
This is my proposed route VFR from the UK:
Please note all times and distances are approximates from my home base at Blackbushe.
Day 1: Get as far south as possible on the first day, there isn't much to see in the Northern Central part of France (From the air).
Customs at LFRG Deauville (Lunch) 126.9Ktm 1.25hrs
Evening in LFBI Poitiers 170.77Ktm 2hrs
You could easily fly the 1st and 2nd day route in a single day buy keep thinking holiday!
Day 2: Routing via Limoges and through the hills (Low lying).
Break at LFCR Rodez 160Ktm 1.5hrs
Afternoon/evening in LFMT Montpellier 80Ktm 0.75hrs
This could also be flown in one leg.
Day 3:
Clear Day - Morning Departure for the low level route along the coast. Foggy day, usually clears by the afternoon.
Routing: LFMT Montpellier passing Marseille, Toulon, St Tropez, LFMD Cannes. 142Ktm 1.3hrs
This route offers an impressive view of the coast with routing altitudes between 600' and 1500'.
Day 4:
Cannes
Day 5 : Through the pass to the Champagne. ( max height of ground amsl 4390')
LFLY Lyon Bron via LFNF, LFNH (turning points only) 188Ktm 2.0hrs
LFSR Reimes via AUTUN, TROYES, LFFZ. 244Ktm 2.5hrs
Day 6 : Home
LFAT Le Touquet 118Ktm 1.0hrs Customs fuel etc.
EGLK Blackbushe 120ktm 1.0 hrs
That makes 1348Ktm about 12-13 hours in the air. Of course you could do it quicker by routing direct or going IFR (for those who can).
Your comments and preferred timings should be posted here. I am looking at late September as my ideal time.
If anyone wants to see the route an a Memorymap file or a GPS export send me a PM or e-mail.
