Commander 112B upgrade

navygm

New member
Malta
Hello to all,

We have a Commander 112B which has old NAV/Radios equipment and I'm trying to see what avionics upgrades are available with an STC already approved.

Until now I have feedback from Garmin and Bendix/King that there are no STCs for this aircraft model when referring to navigational equipment.

I would like some feedback from an owner that has this aircraft model and let me know what new equipment can be installed.

appreciate all the feedback!

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Hi Gareth; do you happen to be N629CC, S/N 544 in Malta? now w/a Hot Shot conversion?
that was a very nice 112B.

Not getting the correct info - Almost all avionics stuff that you would be interested in is approved for the AC11. Problem might be where he is looking in the STC list. Some list the plane as CPAC or it could be under Rockwell or Commander or somewhere else but it is there. We have such a wide array of equipment installed in the fleet that I am amazed you are having an issue.

What are you interested in installing?

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

your email was a good clue, Gareth. :D
does Kenneth still own it?

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Hello Gareth,

Not sure of your location, (you may want to update your profile) but I don't think you can go wrong with the big names, Garmin / Aspen etc.

I tackled the upgrade in stages;
1- com / nav (GPS w/gpss)
2 - eng monitor
3- EFIS
4 - still working on but - panel overlay is next.

Think my 'average' installation cost was approx. 50% of the item price. Hard to accept but appears to be a necessary evil. Though there is NO way I can crawl under / behind the dash like some of these guys manage to do . .
Be prepared for a few extra items: connectors, replacement wiring, circuit breakers, mounting trays, and do your homework on 'Subscriptions' to make the new / neat stuff work.

I actually found the upgrade process to be exciting as you go for the next item on your list.

good luck,
John

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Im new to general aviation modification and this is my first modification that im searching for..

We have been looking for new NAV/ILS, radios and gps coupled with the autopilot.
Aircraft is US registered but located in Malta - europe so a certificattion for EASa is required.

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

I have a 112B

I run the below and find it to be completely sufficient for everything I do or will do.

Garmin GNS430 Nav/GPS (would love roll steering but can do without it)
Garmin GTX327 transponder w/encoder (would not buy this new given the ADS B mandate. I will just get an add on box to meet the requirement)
King KCS55A H S I w/KI256 indicator (coupled)
Century III Autopilot w/altitude hold

I would imagine you could get all the above could be purchased used at a good price if that is the route you want to go.

All of the Garmin stuff should be OK. We have a mix of 430's 480's 530's 650's and 750's installed in the fleet as well as Avidine and others.
Are you looking for a GPS/NAV/Com?

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Thanks for the equipment info!
I am not sure if the owner wants used equipment, I will check that because used ones there are more different Garmin models rather than the absolute brand new on the market...which by d way are very expensive!

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Below is the equipment which I was suggesting...the issue with the below is that when I contacted Garmin they replied that there is no STC for this equipment..
Garmin GTN625 will be connected to autopilot Century IIB

Garmin GTX345 + encoder P/N: 011-03080-01

So now i might see if I find these 430's etc..
Anyone knows where can I get list of STCs for the 430,480 etc.. Valid for EASA?

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Me again here...

So the owner now is looking at the comms radio trig avionics model TY91 and was wondering if anyone is familiar with these...
still I cannot find any approval for it until now for the 112

any help?

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

Here's the Garmin GNS-400/500 series STC and AML, which has 112B listed as approved:

Radios don't have STCs specific to individual airplanes. They have a TSO qualifying them as an approved radio, you can put them in whatever airplane you like. Nothing is required to change a radio other than a logbook entry.

Re: Commander 112B upgrade

That's not necessarily true. If you change the type of radio, you must have your A&P make out a form 337, stating the change, mounting locations, weights, and moments of the new units, as well as the change in W&B. If you are just replacing slide-in units like one of the TKM MX radios, the radio you are installing should have either an 8130 or at least a yellow tag, then a sign-off in the airframe logbook.

There is no 337 to file for a radio. A radio replacement is not a major alteration.

I see no point in yellow tags, personally. The only possible benefit it could provide is a liability recourse but it's not like anyone is going to go and sue someone for a 2,000 dollar radio. It either works or doesn't.
