COG Fly In

Re: COG Fly In

Carol,

I think just the opposite way to you and others.

My first fly in was Sedona, and it was a challenge. Not the type of flying I am used to and took a lot of planning and new charts. This year for me is less than an hour’s flight, flat land, most of it I fly over all the time. Almost boring. But I can be a host.

The Alaska trip last year took over two years of planning, the planning was as much fun as the actual trip. I like a challenge and to learn new things and gain new experiences.

I am all for Greenland next year.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: COG Fly In

The plan (at this point) is to be westward for the 2011 fly-in.

As Frank pointed out, the idea was to alternate back and forth to the western third and then the eastern third of the US. We were trying to support CPAC for a couple of years and then there was some sentiment amongst the officers of going 'central' with MIchigan and Texas. Fredericksburg was actually quite a bit more westward - about 1000 miles from southern Cal and 1500 from NE.

What we'd like to come up with for 2011 is something that is roughly on a vertical line drawn down the western third of the country. That will make it roughly equidistant for everyone on the west coast, north central, and Texas area. Those of us on the East Coast will have another long trip although I don't mind as long as I can arrange my work schedule (Sedona ended up as 3 days out for me and 2 back).

We could do Sedona again, Albuquerque would be nice although late September timeframe has some conflicts with the Hot Air balloon festival, and I also think Colorado Springs might be good. We have some experience at Sedona but would need some volunteers to scout out other locations. Our requirements list is somewhat involved.

Bob, Bill and I have already talked about getting 2011 planning started early in order to give as much time to whomever volunteers to help with the effort. We weren't going to have any formal announcement to that effect yet but I don't mind getting started now. If anyone is thinks they'd like to get involved with the 2011 fly-in planning, please drop me a note either through the board sytem or at gmores at microdata.com

Re: COG Fly In

Carol I too have to pitch in that I acknowledge your keen interests in a W fly-in but it was the SE's turn in the rotate it around. While not a COG Board member I know they consider the location factors carefully.

Here's hoping you rope in a few W coast members and Suzie is a must in that team and throw off 3 location candidates for comment for us by the 2010 Flyin in Sept. I am one of the members helping the COG board in the 2010 Flyin and would love to have a brief group discussion as an agenda items at Jekyll Island of the candidates your team wants to offer. What do you think?

"We surveyed several locations in the SE and felt that going beyond N FL into Central FL posed distance problems for the NE & Mid West members" :-(
----------
There have been only two annual gigs in the Western half of the country since the 1990s -
----------
Carole-----I can recall when we did gigs all too often at Las Vegas---before the '90's, mainly because we had a West Coast movement to get the spar fixed through litgation that was initiated from Los Angeles. It seems that if we want to move the center of gravity West for a COG gathering, we should have a series of West Coast mini/micro gatherings first to get a concensus of a "Best" place. Please see the
"Wings and Wheels July 17 2010 O69 / KPET"
thread as a starter micro gathering.

Re: COG Fly In

John I agree (without taking any pot shots at the west Commanders) a great way to bat around locations is to do mini meets and flyins all over teh West and that will crystallize thinking about a set of locations.

Perhaps a gathering in Rosewell NM would work because Gay M, Scott S, Mark B and some others could be tour guides for the local UFO lore since I think they are kin to the crew of the one the government hid away and then dissected the crew......a recent leaked report had a picture and the pilot looked a bit like one of these guys.
