Chicago Commander! Any others?

New to Chicago from Denver and have had my Commander for almost six months now. She's a 1978 112TC-A and loves long trips! The plane was down for some time doing some minor panel upgrades (haha...minor!) which brought her from '1978 state-of-the-art' to 2019.

Are there any Chicago-area Commander owners that have a good A&P that they recommend?

Hi Jeff; and welcome to the Group. (nice panel :- ) There are members No., West and So.: Waukegan, Downers Grove, Lockport and Joliet. where are you based?

Judi

Thanks for the reply and compliment, Judi! It's great to be here. The airplane is at GYY but I've been venturing to all of the area airports - and finding the best places to fly to lunch, of course!

maybe stay S.E. for maint. then? there's a good 112A owner @ VPZ. doesn't frequent the board much, but can hook you up w/Doug to talk about his shop.

I'd love that! Thanks so much for the referral! It's much appreciated.

I’d have to agree, that panel is state of the art. Welcome to the Midwest! I have been trying to meet a couple of Wisconsin pilots for lunch somewhere in their state, but our schedules haven’t coordinated as of yet. The weather has not helped either. Should we include you too?

Thanks Rolf! I'd love to be included. Yesterday was beautiful so took a trip to Jackson, MI for lunch. Looking forward to meeting up!

I can't help you about an A&P in the Chicago area, but as someone who just THOUGHT they just upgraded their panel on their Commander - WOW - great looking panel! Makes me still think that this air frame could compete today with Cirrus if someone would just take the Commander and apply those types of updates.

Great looking panel and airplane!

Welcome to the group Jeff. Great looking panel. I really like the G1000. Which transponder did you put in? From Chicago, you can get to Toronto (CYKZ) in one hop. We have a bunch of Commanders in the Greater Toronto Area (which now includes Kitchener/Waterloo, Just kidding Tony). Maybe not a lunch thing, but certainly a long weekend.

Great looking panel and airplane!

Thanks so much, Stephen! I totally agree that with some advanced avionics, the Commander is a great competitor to today's new-builds!

Thanks, Phil! The main screen is actually a G500TXi and it's partner is the GTN750 which is fantastic because it is all touchscreen and the 750 can also be controlled via voice command with the 'push to command' button on the right side of my yoke. Makes flying solo in congested airspace much easier! The transponder is the Garmin 345 with bluetooth. I'm definately ready for a hop up to Toronto --- once the customs sticker arrives. The application was processed right before the US government shutdown so still waiting on the sticker for the plane. The in-laws live right by CYZR so there will be many trips to Canada in the future! I'm looking forward to meeting up in CYKZ!!

Welcome. Another TC/A. Cool

Poplar Grove Airmotive (C77) has maintained mine for the last 9 years. Great people, engine shop is top notch, I can't say enough about how great they are.

Jeff,

We sent our US Customs sticker info in in November and got the sticker a few weeks ago. FYI .. my first Commander was a 112TCA. Great bird. Sarnia is about 1 to 1.5 hours away, depending on the winds, from Toronto.

I’m up in SE WI, good fuel stop at BUU, Burlington. There is a 114 based there too.

I'm at KLOT. I've been trying to find a reliable mechanic in the area for a while. Midwest Avtech at KVYS will be working on my rigging next month. I know he used to have a Commander there.so I hope this works out well.
