Hi all,

Ia anyone aware of any use of asbestos/asbestos-based materials used int he Commander? I'm aware that earlier models used asbestos-containing gaskets in the engine shrouds but there's no other mention of it in the maintenance manual.

I'm going to be stripping and refurbishing a fuselage and I have no way of knowing if and what contains asbestos in this air frame.

Thanks for any info.

None other known.

Thanks Tony,

I was was stripping the centre console today and found a panel of, what I think is, fiberglass insulation on the back of it. It's a dark yellow colour with foil skins either side. It's just starting to concern me given that asbestos was so common at the time this aircraft was produced.

Every thing you find and have any concerns about it - send it out for testing and that should ease your concerns.

Thanks Frank,

This is obviously the safest was to do it but what about things which cant be sent for testing of I don't spot? What about the engine firewall?

It seems a little strange that so many of these aircraft are flying about and there's not record or certification that they do not contain asbestos.

Hi Richard, what serial number (or current registration) is the airframe you purchased ?

I guess you found a good reason to double mask when not socially distanced from the plane.

Probably either Rock wool or fiberglass, never seen asbestos dyed yellow.

Have you spoken with any paint shops who may have refurbished a Commander?

Hi Rolf,

Not yet.

I bought the airframe from a guy who restores vintage aircraft and gave some
reassuring commentary. I also contacted Commander Aircraft themselves but have yet to receive a reply.

I have an asbestos survey booked for this Monday so I should have some definitive results by next week.

I’ll try some repair shops as you suggest.

Thanks!

Do you mind me asking if they found anything? I am doing some remodeling on my house and am dealing with asbestos and it is very frustrating. I am looking at purchasing a Commander in the future and this would be good info to have

Everyone should be aware asbestos is not that evil and anything that you breath in that doesn’t metabolize is bad for you fiberglass included! As mentioned a simple mask is plenty of protection and you should wear it with fiberglass also! As a chemist for Pfizer all my life asbestos is not very harmful and the paint solvents you encounter are more of a threat. So don’t worry about it and fix that plane up1

Hi,

Yes the only finding was some black 'bitumen-type' sealant around some ports on the engine-side of the firewall. It's considered lower risk as it is non-friable since the asbestos is contained within a compound. If you are going to work on a particular aircraft I recommend getting a survey done on it.

Good luck, stay safe, happy flying my friend.

Richard, how is the SIM project coming along ? Do you have any progress photos ?
