If anyone is planning an Alaska trip I would like to know. I have read with interest the folks that flew to Alaska and I wish I had owned my Commander at that time as I would have gone.

Re: Alaska Trip

Frank it was a trip of a life time. I will be back but will be a couple of years though.

Re: Alaska Trip

Frank,

I am considering a flight to Anchorage this summer but not as a "Fly Alaska" trip. Have frinds that live there and I think I'll just take it on myself. Want to do it as a flight of two?

Re: Alaska Trip

Steve, What is your schedule like? It is really worth considering. If I get to Anchorage I would like to go to the end of the haul road. The only place I know of that has fuel is Wiseman and I am not sure I like the idea of the gravel stuff of there.

I don't know if a round trip can be made from Fairbanks. One thing about it - you need night currency that far north.

Re: Alaska Trip

The last sentence should read - you don't need night currency....

Re: Alaska Trip

I would be glad to be your guide, for a modest payment. I would book the hotels and you pay for them. It WAS a great trip.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: Alaska Trip

Frank,
I'm not sure when I might attempt this. I'm retiring in May and have until August to do this. (I start a new job in August). I think it would be a three day trip from DC to Anchorage. I plan on doing it all IFR but haven't worked out a final route. Safe to say it's just an idea right now.

Re: Alaska Trip

You find a home for 08W yet Steve? I have the routes we took last year going/coming across from Tipton to Alaska if you want to look at them.

Re: Alaska Trip

I have reason (paid work) to get to Calgary and Edmonton this summer, and could easilly stop in Grand Prairie, then Achorage and Fairbanks and make sales calls out of it. Fairly flexible schedule wise. I would be interested.

C'mon, Lonnie ... you need to sell Industrial Cleaning services up there, don't you?

I think Ken't offer is intriguing but I think 4 or 5 of us sharing a bed in the Econo-8 Motor Lodge is just going too cheap.

North end @ Prudhoe or south end @ Valdez? If the north end, it would probably be a long day from Fairbanks. Probably a two day from Anchorage. We did a full day loop from Bettles to Pt Barrow (lunch) to Prudhoe and back to Bettles (good condition but gravel). An amazing loop but also a full day. South end to Valdez is a great single day trip from Anchorage.

Another thing about the Fairbanks-Prudhoe-Fairbanks loop... as the locals will tell you, the trip can be very dangerous approaching Atigun from the south. Cameras and wx reporting don't show just north of pass and once you penetrate the neck of the pass, there won't be enough room to turn around if the wx on the north side is garbage. Having been educated about this from multiple sources up there, we circled around coming north through Anaktuvik (broad pass and relatively shallow grade) and entered Atigun from the north side where we could determine wx before entering the narrow portion. The pass floor/walls littered with broken airplanes and trucks is silent testimony to the potential problem.

Of course, if you go turbo over the Brookies on a nice day w/o ice concerns, then it doesn't matter; but where's the fun in that? If you make the trip, don't neglect to land on the haul road... airplanes have right of way if you care to press the issue w/ an 18-wheeler. ;-)

Re: Alaska Trip

Jim,

Still haven't accepted the job yet, but I have a feeling I'll be sharing ramp space with you. Want to invest in an LLC and build the hangers? We'd have our own rent free!

WRT the trip route info, just send to my email, I know you have it and thanks!
