Re: Airstrip Update

Ken,
Are you suggesting the 2012 Commander Fly In be at the Grand Oaks Plantation?
I think it would be great!

Re: Airstrip Update

Looks great Ken and thanks for posting those pictures & diary. Interesting (and fun) project.

Re: Airstrip Update

Fantastic, Ken! You should get a few of the little log cabins for guests like they have at Lee Bottom Flying Field, just up-river from Louisville, KY. I would sure as heck rent one from you every time I go to Florida, which is 3-4 times annually.

50 bucks! This is a very cool grass strip, The owner is very friendly and if he knows you are building a grass strip, I am sure he would answer any questions from his experience.

Scott.
Thanks for the link, looks like a fantastic place.

I am going to go over it line by line as they are doing a lot of things that I was thinking about.

Any time you are in the area stop in and spend the night. I just posted a picture of the guest house in the diary section.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: Airstrip Update

Ken;

What's the latest on the plantation? I don't see any updates for a little over a year.

Re: Airstrip Update

Still working every night and week-end.

Had a lot of trouble with my Kubota tractor in the last year.

Just can't seem to keep it running. Had to install a new transmission this year, the lift arms will not stay working. It is a new just out of warranty tractor. Every time it quits the weeds keep growing and I get behind.

I was harrowing today and the lift arms quit again. The factory tech reps are being very good and have done a lot of repairs at no charge to me. In the shop for a week then working for a day.

If It had not quit today I would have had the whole place almost ready to sprig.

I have the pond dug and it is great, sprigger is almost ready to go, just plan to install new sweeps this coming week-end.

Waiting on weather to warm up just a little and some final grading.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken.

Re: Airstrip Update

I did a low recon about a year ago. Runway clearing look very good. Ken, how long will the strip be?

Re: Airstrip Update

John,

Runway 18-36 will be 4500' with a displaced threshold on 36 due to trees. Crosswind runway 07-25 will be 2000'

New Google Earth shows the trees cleared.

31.72 N
84.31 W

Or from PZD Vor it is 4 mn on the 350 radial. I will have an un-official VOR approach. And a GPS one.

I got the Kubota lift arms working tonight. I have figured out to just leave it overnight and it works next day. Has worked so far anyway.

Took ten soil samples today to send to the lab. Waiting to see what the fertilizer will cost. I have old soil sample but need new ones.

Life is a barrel of fun.
