For those that want to begin performing their due diligence, we are set for West Baden Springs, IN (KFRH) for the weekend of 9/14 - 9/16 with rooms being blocked back to 9/10 for those wishing to arrive early for the party. There is much information @

http://www.frenchlick.com/hotels/westbaden

and all are encouraged to closely look through the site. A full featured resort including casino and spas.

The owners reportedly spent in excess of 500 million dollars in renovations over the past several years and the resort has become a true be-there-or-be-square destination w/ completely modern facilities while remaining a historic location w/ great traditions. The addition of gaming made it cost effective to really bring the facilities back to their former luxury state.

French Lick (KFRH) is a non-towered IFR airport w/ 27 ramp tiedowns and another 20 or so ramp spaces w/o tiedowns. There are a few open t-hangars available. Airport has contacted FAA and received approval to close a portion of Taxiway A for additional hard surface parking if wx warrants. Ample grass for additional tiedown space if wx permits. Reasonable fuel currently around $5.25/gal and discounts are being discussed. FBO has agreed to waive all ramp/parking/tiedown/etc. fees for event. Free shuttle service between resort and KFRH (appx 10 min ride).

Louisville, KY is closest airport w/ commercial service. KJVY is a reasonably nearby IFR airport north of Louisville for those needing an ILS. Less than a one hour drive to resort. Shuttle to resort also available from KSDF (southside of town - Louisville) for a fee. (appx 1:15 ride) There are other commercial airports w/in reasonable distance if airline connections are better: IND, EVV, OOM, LEX, CVG.

Although negotiations are continuing, we have secured flat room rates (no upcharge for weekend days) for both hotels for the entire week. $149/dy for French Lick hotel and $189 for West Baden Springs. These rates are for Queen/King style rooms and are substantial discounts from the posted website rates. (ref website for typical room pics) Upgrades to suites are available if desired.

As w/ past fly-ins, there will be an intinerary of scheduled events forthcoming. COG Open golf tournament will likely be on Thursday. Three golf courses on the resort w/ two being professional tournament grade. First rate spa activities for co-pilots. Multiple fly-out opportunities and a scheduled one to the Wright-Patterson Air Force museum is under consideration.

There will be much to do on site for everyone involved, whether individuals or families, so we want to get this preliminary info out to everyone for calendar scheduling. Central US location and generally nice weather during the September period.

We have two hotels available to use for billeting and events. They are less than 5 min from each other (appx 1.5 mi) w/ continuous shuttle running between and large parking facilities at both hotels for those wishing to drive. (casino complex is between the two hotels) We will need to select one site for our scheduled meetings/events and are currently negotiating pricing for each. Although participants may stay at either hotel, we are going to post a poll for those likely to attend as to your preference of venue relative to where you are likely to stay. Poll will be anonymous.

This site should be every bit as enjoyable as Sedona and Jekyll Island. More specific information will be forth coming over the next week or two. Please cast your poll vote as soon as possible. Check out the website for the complete rundown on each hotel before casting your vote.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

They'll have a good time. Plenty to do. Wait until they get to move around some of the chess pieces that are bigger than they are. Right out of Alice in Wonderland. Have them bring their riding boots. Horses on site.

They've grown so much in the past couple of years, some of the troops will think you have a second family. ;-)

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

I live 50 miles south of French Lick. Fly up there for an excellent Breakfast all the time. Huge water park up the hill across from the hotels. West Baden has the 210' dome and I was in a room there two weeks ago. Incredible place. My favorite restaurant is actually at the Donald Ross Golf Course. New course is a Pete Dye and costs $350/round - I"ve not played it. The Ross Course is much less expensive at $75 or so.

Neat little airports all around. This airport should have the parallel taxiway up by then. It is an excellent airport with a nice terminal. Lots of parking. Bloomington IN not far away. Louisville Bowman is 50 miles or so. Lots of little Indiana airports that are a hoot. You can fly down to Owensboro and I'll take you to Moonlight Bar B Q.

French Lick - you will feel like you went back in time. I think you will really enjoy it. It is about a 15 minute van ride to the town and the two hotels are about a mile apart as well. Shuttle service runs between hotels and to airport when needed. A rental car will give you max flexibility but you won't have to have one. Old time train rides. 1932 Governors Convention with FDR in attendance occurred at the French Lick Hotel. Great spas at both hotels.

Let me know if I need to run up for logistics or whatever.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

Looks like Mitzi and I can make this one.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

Second that on the Moonlight bar-b-que. Stopped here on the way up Boyne Mountain and had the mutton sandwich. Never had better.

Thanks Michael. We may take you up on the offer.

The COG Open will be on the Ross course. I've played all three courses there and the Dye will be too long and narrow for many of the COG "pros". A number of blind shots as well. Not a good fit for our crew. Ross course will be fun and a still reasonable test for the better golfers. We may also have a mixed couples Red Bull Breakfast Invitational on the 9-hole Valley course if the interest exists. Should be a blast.

Should have mentioned, the airport director said the new parallel taxiway is on track to be completed this Spring. Will make the FRH version of the Commander Tora, Tora, Tora pass less complicated. ;-)

Sounds great good work should be able to make it.

Here's something ironic
The hotel web site - right under their name graphic of

FRENCH LICk

ironically says -

An American Classic!

A fly-out to the Moonlight BBQ would be excellent. Let's scout a piece of the river between Louisville and OWB that has no wires ... I see about 20 commanders flying down the river at about 100 feet, all in a row. That would be gorgeous. 5 min. from OWB to Moonlight and they will pick up however many we have come.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

Do we get to meet Larry Bird ? :)

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

Looks like a great fly-in.
Too bad it overlaps with my honeymoon!
From 9/3-9/23 I'll be exploring Machu Picchu, the Amazon, and the Galapagos Islands.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

Congratulations! By all means, enjoy your honey's moon. Always next year.

Family home just up the road. BB court still in side yard last time I was by there.

We are so totally in! I will check Robs calendar tomorrow to make sure no appearances are scheduled. ~ Susie

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

56 NM from French Like is Lee Bottom Flying Field. a beautiful, well-maintained grass strip, 4,080 x 100 feet, run by a rabid libertarian character. It sits in the river valley, right along side the Ohio River. Just beautiful. They have fly-ins there 4 or 5 times in the summer. A really cool place ... no real facilites other than bathrooms, but it would be easy to arrange a picnic lunch. They will get 250 planes in there for their big fly-in in late September. this would be a great fly-out. I would be happy to make arrangements if folks are interested.

This grass strip is perfect. They have had DC-3's come in and out. It is not "challenging." If you are timid about grass strip, this is a great one to do for some experience.

That looks neat Scott.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

I concurr LEE Bottom field is a great fly visit field and the owner/operator is a great guy who just loves aviation.

Re: 2012 COG Annual Fly-in

I'm in for a Lee Bottom fly-out. Been a fan of that place from afar for quite a few years.

I'm a little Timid of grass landings in airplanes I will have to get the king videos out and study up not sure about it though!!! :-)
