Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Someone in my CFI class works at an FBO and told me about this great group of people who are taking a trip up to Alaska.

He was speaking of a Commander Owner who flies into Louisianna, I'm thinking likely Ian Cairns, but not sure.

I had to tell him I was very familiar with the group and very envious, but was unable to go.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

With regard to those going onward and upward to Alaska. If I can quote my mother when she took me to my first pee wee football tryouts
-- "don't F up!". LOL

Seriously, enjoy and be safe all. Hope the skies are 5 by 5 the entire time.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

No pooches to be screwed on this trip!

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Sven/Jim,

Any more thoughts on the Friday rendezvous point? Still BFF or are we going to use the place slightly to the north w/ cheap avgas?

Looks like I'll be dodging a few storms as I depart Ohio tomorrow evening. Better wx to the west.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Hey Dave, who was that? What FBO?
BTW I started a blog on this site to post about the trip
commander owner forum>blog>idcairns
Don't know yet what size attachments it will allow but we intend to post comments and pictures of the trip as time allows.

Bill, I just talked to Sven, we are thinking KTOR at 11am MDT. Fuel is a buck/gal cheaper in Airnav than BFF. Need to use a car into town if we want to eat, but I think that is true a BFF too.

I'll contact you via email.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Ian,

His name is Tim, he works for a place called Vector (I think) out of Abbeyville in Louisianna. I believe the FBO recentl changed names and had been called Greenville possibly.

This is all from a conversation during lunch, so I may be off on the names a bit.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

N377SB and the crew of three are in Olympia waiting on the others.

Checked in with Dale , have the trip kits and are ready to go.

Due to great navigation and a perfect Commander we are ahead of schedule.

Took us 23.8 hours to get here from South Georgia, but we did not fly direct.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

5 other commanders will be in late sat or early sunday am. All arriving thru Big nowhere
See you all there.
:)

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Started out late yesterday and flew to Wayne, NE. We'll be in either late today or early Sunday depending on weather. Safe flying and see everyone there.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

What a great trip it has been so far,
Left Georgia on Tuesday 14th. and spent a couple of days in Dallas, on to Old Mexico and then up to the Grand Canyon, flew over the canyon for a few hours then on to Las Vegas.
Two days in Las Vegas including a tour of the Hoover Dam. On to SanFrancisco for a couple of days and then up here to Olympia.

Going surfing on the coast today. Plane is flying perfect and no mechanical glitches.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

N900CD and crew are currently in Lancaster CA. We got here mid day yesterday. And lots of thanks to Jack, N900CD is in a Hangar at KWJF. We started out from Houston on Thursday the 23rd and got into TUS later that afternoon after a stop at KPEQ. On route we said high to Sven who had just left Alpine Tx.
We are planning on leaving KWJF early tomorrow morning, the 26th, for OAK and then on to KCEC then on to KOLM. We are expecting tobe there late afternoon.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

I am in Denver as scheduled. will be in OLM tomorrow evening all going well and the crick don't rise.

Arrived this evening with thunderstorms all around, 1 mile vis and 1000 ceilings. Controllers were great, shot the ILS and it popped out right in front of me.

tomorrow ought to be fun.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Dave,

I was in Abbeville twice last week and was talking about the trip. Yeah, I'm excited.

All,

Posted a blog on the commander blog site if you are interested. Trying how to download photos and video. So no images yet but will come.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

The blog will be good, as well as other sites folks have referred to, but I think I can speak for all of us down here "left behind" that it will be great to see as much as possible posted here by as many of you as can find the time. It will be fun to see the different impressions, observations, and no doubt some friendly banter about Lonnie's fast plane, Lonnie's horse*bleep* landings, Lonnie's Mississippi drawl (I'm being kind) that scares the bejesus out of the Alaskans.

I also want to know exactly how many feet you have to be above the Palin Household in Wasilla to see Alaska.

Keep the happenin's coming on the webboard. We're living your trip vicariously. I just got back from Alaska 2 weeks ago and put in an order for VFR for you all. But they never listen.

Alex, if I had known you were stopping at PEQ I'd have come up to see you - but as it turned out Alpine was socked in that morning. Cleared an hour after Sven left.

Happy trails and have a beer for me.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

Wayne and I arrived in OLM yesterday(sat.) afternoon aroung 4:30. Left Phoenix, DVT, in am to Elko, NV lunch and gas then to OLM. Uneventful trip, second leg warm and lumpy. Lots of haze around the OR WA coast. Flew directly by Mt St Helen, incredible hole in the side of that Mt. Great seafood dinner last night and lazying around today waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. More seafood tonight.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

I envy those on the Alaska trip. I'm in Seattle today at BFI after flying up the west coast of Canada to an airport called Sand Spit(CYZP). Wx is beautiful and the senery great. Better down low than at FL410. Have a great trip. Can't wait to see some pictures.

Re: 2009 Alaskan Tour

While sitting at Steve's house in Alpine we enjoyed an evening of light shows. Alpine city lights at the bottom.

It never hails in Alpine. PLane in Hangar this time.
