New member - looking at buying a Commander 114

I got my Commander lsat year as a SEL / SES, no IFR, ~200 hours, zero Commander time. I went through Air Pros (Victoria Neuville) as a broker, and Harco was one of two that quoted -- forget who the other was, Harco had the better rate. Not cheap (need to finish my IFR!), but possible. The one...

    2022 Fly-In?

Laughlin definitely counts as affordable hotels (although I don't know about the airport fees).

Thoughts and advice - VFR trip in 2 mos - Denver CO, Palm Springs CA, Napa CA, Denver CO

Does Denver tend to refuse Bravo transitions? I think in a hundred or so flights in the Bay Area, San Francisco only refused me once.

Fair. Still waiting for the throttle cable re-rig work to go above 14k, soon!

Thoughts and advice - VFR trip in 2 mos - Denver CO, Palm Springs CA, Napa CA, Denver CO

Dean, what route are you looking at for Denver to grand junction? Rollins pass? I’ve never done the Rockies before and am looking at visiting a friend in Boulder.

Thoughts and advice - VFR trip in 2 mos - Denver CO, Palm Springs CA, Napa CA, Denver CO

Dean, I've done part of this trip (southern Utah KKNB to Bay area Califorinia KPAO/KRHV) three times in the three months I've had my Commander so far... Recognize my inexperience, but a few thoughts! Leg 1: Plenty of good fuel stops. Give a shout if you choose KKNB, self-serve only but usually...

Extended x-country - CO to TX

Follow-up: I bought the exact ladder Dean identified for my mother's visit. It's definitely the right ladder! Hand-rail folds down, which is how I used it (flaps down, ladder facing the aircraft, slid over the normal step. Height is right for going from ladder to wing. Fits in the baggage...

    New owner!

Arrived Kanab! KPMP -> KFPY -> KTUP -> KFSM -> KTDW -> KDRO -> KSGU -> KKNB. I'll be spinning off a whole lot of threads in the next few days with questions etc.

    New Partnership w/EarthX batteries

Yeah, that's the question. And certainly dropping in a TSO'd or PMA'd lead acid battery, even a sealed battery, is trivially acceptable. But this is a case where they've drawn attention to additional risks because it /can/ change the requirements of the aircraft. For example normally Halon and...

    New Partnership w/EarthX batteries

Let me try to be clear that (a) I really want a lighter, LiFePO4 based battery; (b) I'm a fan of lithium batteries in aircraft, and have spent the last three years working to certify an aircraft with hundreds and hundreds of pounds of lithium batteries; and (c) although I've worked on certified...

    New Partnership w/EarthX batteries

The Gills (and OEM batteries) were/are lead acid, not lithium, I thought?

    New Partnership w/EarthX batteries

See link above (which goes to http://fsims.faa.gov/wdocs/other/major_repair_alteration_job-aid.pdf). It's FAA guidance to DERs / safety inspectors / etc on what changes are eligible for DER-only sign-offs, which require STCs, etc. It's basically an AC (although not AC numbered) that acts as an...

    New Partnership w/EarthX batteries

Still reading through this entire thread, so it's possible that this is addressed later... I understand the logic here that replacing one 12V DC battery with another seems minor, but AFS-300 rev 6.0 item F.1 specifically calls out that "ny alteration that installs a new lithium battery or...
