  • Hi Tony. Follow up to the fuel strainer question: did you reseal your own tanks? Seems like a daunting task, however, I’m not finding any good options in my search. Can’t imagine how long it would take. Could that Polygone be used to soften and/or remove the old sealant? Thanks. Larry
    Tony,
I have a Commander 112, S/N 23. I am looking at installing CIE's digital fuel sending units. I can not figure out how to get in the vicinity of the tank sending units on the exterior of the rear of the tank. The maintenance manual says you can reach it from the inspection panel just inboard of the fuel tank, which may be true for later S/N's but not for my bird. Have ever attempted to get into the exterior fuel tank sending unit area and if so how was it accomplished. I am reaching out to you because our planes are only 4 serial numbers apart.

Hi Barry, it is impossible. There 'should' absolutely be an inspection panel at that point but the early birds don't have it. In our case (because you need new wiring between the panel and the CIES) we fished new wires from inside the tanks that already had a connector installed and had it JUST come in through the hole. We tie wrapped the new wire to the abandoned wire that was being used and then from the inspection panel in the spar up in the main gear wells, we could reach in a bit and get some tie wraps to secure the new wire but ultimately, there is about 3' that is not tied between the gear well and the connector at the sender location but that is fine.

Our prior senders had been sealed in place from the inside using PRC and when we installed the CIES, we only used the supplied gaskets and it has been totally dry. When you plug the CIES connector into the connector you fished, you push it back through the hole into the dry area so there is a little loop there.

We have been super happy with the CIES and a number of other owners have installed since we did. They are bang on accurate.

    Cheers, Tony

Hi Marc, I checked an no joy. Originally had dozens and now down to one spare set for our ship. Sorry.
Saw you flew into Killarney last week. Sorry I didn’t know you were heading my way. I would have made the trip to see you. Hope the fish and chips were good.

Yes, it was a beautiful flight. C-GODZ (114) also joined and an RV-10 ship both out of Buttonville. We had a SR22 and DA40 on the ramp as well. Fish and chips where, as always....delicious ! One of my favorite destinations.
Hello. I notice on Flight Aware you are sometimes in my area. If you ever happen to stop at CYSB, give me a shout. I’m trying to organize an ownership group but without success. I would like to learn how yours operates. HappyLandings.

Hi there, as soon as things open up I will pop up and have lunch. I take every Friday off now until September to fly somewhere interesting and would be happy to visit. I went through significant learning and networking to figure out how to structure the partnership financially and legally and we have something rock solid that has worked for 8 years including two partner swaps. Share your contact info and I will keep you posted on travel plans. I have shared our partnership documents/agreements with a few other groups these past years as well to give them something to work with. BR/Tony

    See you soon!
From posts I read you are the fuel tank expert. Do you happen to know where I could find fuel flapper springs part no. 48517-3? I saw old posts about them being made but I can’t find anything recent.

thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there, I think your asking for someone to give up any surplus is your only option period. Myself and another guy on the group had the springs made and I had a ton of them a few years ago but kept contributing to requestors and only have two left for myself. I am heading out to the airfield now and was going to check my 'tank hardware' box to see if I had stashed any out there or could help. In my eight years of Commander ownership, these springs and the 'logic relay' used in the landing gear control circuit have been the only absolute unobtainium and the springs had to be made. I will get back to you this weekend with anything I find. If I had any surplus they would already have been in the mail to you !!

Hi Ryan (almost) good news ! I checked my hangar stuff and I have one brand new spring and one original that I removed from our aircraft a few years ago. It appears to be mechanically sound and fine. I will send you both of them for the cost of postage as coming from Canada to Texas it is probably going to be about $ 20 US dollars. No charge for the parts. If you want them, PM me your address to tonyvarga@mail.com (not gmail) and I will post them out tomorrow to you and email you back to cost.
It's going to become my bedtime reading I suspect! This site is a wealth of knowledge! Hope your flight went well today!
    Hi Tony
Yes the engine needs to be torn down as well. The actuator rod was likely the original from the logs so metal fatigue may be a cause. What is most heartbreaking is that I replaced the prop just 2 months ago with a brand new 3 blade.
    Thanks for your reply
    Philip
