Hi Steve! Sorry to hear about your potential sale. My dad (75y/o) is very close to the reality of selling his 310 as well.
I'm real close to knocking out my check ride and after new year will be airplane shopping more seriously. I don't think a 114 is going to be in the budget (higher purchase price and insurance), but I would sure appreciate a ride in yours though! Who do you use for your annuals in this area and are they well versed with Commander singles?
I know I just said I'm not really airplane shopping, but I've actually looked at a few! hahaha I have a line on a 112 out in West TN which has been infrequently flown over the past 3-4 years and as a result had metal in the oil filter last annual. Because of that it has not had it's annual completed while the owner decided what to do and sat further. I get a sense that he is ready to part ways with the plane. If I could get it at an appropriate price and have the budget to have a freshly overhauled engine, I'd be a happy guy! Of course before I ever got to that point, I'd want to have the airframe looked over for other potential showstoppers. Plus, I'll have a lot of logistics to manage like ferry permits and ferry pilots.
When you're done with that annual and ready to come by, feel free to give me a call or text.
Kind Regards,

For me being a new pilot my insurance agent advised that I choose an aircraft that is either high performance (like your 114) OR complex, but not both. Or - of course a fixed gear non high performance. I'm in a position in life where I'm trying to skip the 'total beginner' phase of aircraft ownership. I have flown literally thousands of hours in the right seat next to my dad and feel like something tame like a 112 would be completely reasonable and safe to haul my small family. The way I see it is I could buy a little Cherokee, pay sales tax on it, get bored with it, sell it and buy what I should have bought to begin with and pay sales tax again! I think I'll come out ahead paying a little more on insurance for a year or two over paying massive TN sales tax twice.
They said on a 112, I'll expect to pay about $3500 for the first year and quite a lot more if it was a 114.
I work in live entertainment and have be very lucky to have been on paid furlough since March with no end in sight. I've helped my employer with a few video shoots since then, but we won't be back doing real events until the summer most likely. I've had a lot of quality time with my 5 year old daughter, have had time to work on other endeavors, and of course finally had time to knock out my PPL. With all that being said aside from check ride preparations, I have absolutely nothing on my calendar. Heck, if you wanted some company when you go to fly the plane back from Alabama, I'd be happy to join you!
