  • Hi Steve,

Are you still parting out the 114? I'm looking for the console tunnel cover, part 43233-3. It's item -3 in Figure 2-48 from the IPC (attached).

Let me know if you've got it.

    Thanks,
    Frank
Hi Steve! Sorry to hear about your potential sale. My dad (75y/o) is very close to the reality of selling his 310 as well.

I'm real close to knocking out my check ride and after new year will be airplane shopping more seriously. I don't think a 114 is going to be in the budget (higher purchase price and insurance), but I would sure appreciate a ride in yours though! Who do you use for your annuals in this area and are they well versed with Commander singles?

I know I just said I'm not really airplane shopping, but I've actually looked at a few! hahaha I have a line on a 112 out in West TN which has been infrequently flown over the past 3-4 years and as a result had metal in the oil filter last annual. Because of that it has not had it's annual completed while the owner decided what to do and sat further. I get a sense that he is ready to part ways with the plane. If I could get it at an appropriate price and have the budget to have a freshly overhauled engine, I'd be a happy guy! Of course before I ever got to that point, I'd want to have the airframe looked over for other potential showstoppers. Plus, I'll have a lot of logistics to manage like ferry permits and ferry pilots.

When you're done with that annual and ready to come by, feel free to give me a call or text.

    Kind Regards,
    Brad B

Hey Steve, That seems like a great price on an annual (give or take!). I grew up helping my dad with owner assisted annuals and plan to do the same on mine if I can find a willing A+P in my area.

For me being a new pilot my insurance agent advised that I choose an aircraft that is either high performance (like your 114) OR complex, but not both. Or - of course a fixed gear non high performance. I'm in a position in life where I'm trying to skip the 'total beginner' phase of aircraft ownership. I have flown literally thousands of hours in the right seat next to my dad and feel like something tame like a 112 would be completely reasonable and safe to haul my small family. The way I see it is I could buy a little Cherokee, pay sales tax on it, get bored with it, sell it and buy what I should have bought to begin with and pay sales tax again! I think I'll come out ahead paying a little more on insurance for a year or two over paying massive TN sales tax twice.

They said on a 112, I'll expect to pay about $3500 for the first year and quite a lot more if it was a 114.

I work in live entertainment and have be very lucky to have been on paid furlough since March with no end in sight. I've helped my employer with a few video shoots since then, but we won't be back doing real events until the summer most likely. I've had a lot of quality time with my 5 year old daughter, have had time to work on other endeavors, and of course finally had time to knock out my PPL. With all that being said aside from check ride preparations, I have absolutely nothing on my calendar. Heck, if you wanted some company when you go to fly the plane back from Alabama, I'd be happy to join you!

    Hey Steve,

How is the annual on your 114 going this week?

I called my insurance agent back to see how much more a 114 would be than a 112. This is the agent I am using for my renters insurance who was recommended as someone who is friendly toward new pilots. Based on a few policies they have given to similar new pilots, she figured it would about $4,800 to insure a 114 until I get my IFR ticket and 100 hours. At that point it would go roughly in half. That's not all that much worse than $3500 she told me on a 112 in the end.

I've had an interesting experience talking to various agents about insuring planes. The agent I talked to at Avemco basically laughed me off the phone when I inquired about insuring any kind of complex aircraft. It was basically a 'no, you need to go guy an Archer or 172.' With the way they talked to me, I think they have lost any possibility of getting my business in the future. I think they deal with a lot of kids who are dreaming. I'm 40 and have already had a lifetime of GA experience. This is just round two! :)

I still would really like to skip the 'total beginner' phase of airplane ownership, particularly because these days 'beginner' airplanes are really not that much cheaper! They're all getting bought for top dollar by flight schools with venture capital investors. Beyond that, I don't want to buy (and pay sales tax) on something with zero capability for longer trips, get tired of it in 2-3 years and sell it to buy (and pay sales tax again) on what I should have bought in the first place. I pay quite enough sales tax to the State of Tennessee already, thanks!

    Cheers,

thanks but I can't afford the insurance on a Commander. I've moved on to something else instead.
Hi Steve, two of us Commander owners are planning to get together at airventure . I hope to go Tuesday and camp and Joe will come in on Wednesday. I plan to stay till Friday, Joe will stay till Thursday. If the aircraft camping is full on Tuesday, We plan on going in to 79C, about 10 miles north of KOSH. If I don’t arrive till Wednesday, Joe and I plan to meet somewhere close to Oshkosh early Wednesday morning 7am and fly in together. You are welcome to join us. Here is my cell number 763-350-5559. Or fly in on your own schedule and meet up when you’re available.
