  • Alternator, 100 amp - 112 all models

National Airparts in Deland, FL (800-713-1111). They manufacture their own alternators and are FAA approved for Commander. Their cost is $763 (2003) for a new one. They have a 112A, 112B, 112TC and 112TCA. No belt change. Adjustable bracket supplied w/no additional cost. Same bolts. No wiring change. Replaced 70 Amp Circuit Breaker with 100 Amp from Zeftronics (extra cost but buy from Zeftronics). About 2 hr labor.

  • Carburetor - overhauled - 112TC. Submitted by Joel Schwartz (3/07)

I just received an exchange HA6 carb for the 112TC from Avstar in Jupiter Florida. It was an excellent rebuild and since they had a core it was an easy swap. Approx $700. Highly recommend them!

  • CHT probe alternate source, 114A

After much work by a number of People here in Perth, including an LAME the Chief Engineer of
the Royal Aero Club and John Gowlands Instruments a replacement probe is the readily available Cessna part S 2334-3. It has the same Internal workings/ resistances of the SW 334Y probe and fits straight in.

BUT, it would appear our standard gauges are woefully in accurate up to 50 degrees F or more out. I've also been told that originally the gauge and probe were matched pairs which may account for the erroneous readings now.

However the Instrument shop fitted a trim pot part No. 811542. from early Cessna CHT gauges. The trim pot is not Available separately and in fact the gauge was a SW part which is no longer made but there seems to be plenty of the old gauges around at wreckers etc. We found a number of new ones at the local Cessna dealership and the Aero Club.

The trim pot is fitted in line to the rear of the instrument cluster and after adjustment on the bench for calibration it will work fine. I've fitted a new probe to mine already and it over-reads by about 40 to 50 degrees F, so ill have to get the trim pot fitted.

The fix works as it was done to another commander here and it was Needed to be right to able the LAME to sign it out for flight.

  • CHT rebuild - 112. Submitted by John Uhl

I found a place to buy the CHT with probe that comes complete and calibrated in exchange for the old gauge and probe.

The place is Central Oregon Airparts, 208 Laurel St., Florence, OR 97439; (541) 997-3610. Ask for Brian. Called on a Monday and had the unit in 4 days.

Installed in plane on Saturday and compared to Gem 603 and it was right on. Mine is connected to # 4 which runs about 50 degrees cooler than numbers 1,2,and 3 which all run the same in cruise.

The gauge matches the others just perfectly.

Replace with Mooney M0J Fuel Strainer & Drain assembly: P/N 51250-9, Seal Kit : P/N 61005-001 (Ed. there will need to be some work done to accommodate the drain which is a slightly different thread). Additional parts used:

1 AN894-5-4 Bushing $18.80
1 AN832-6 Union $17.00
1 AN6289-6 Nut $8.00
1 AN814-6D Plug $8.00
1 AN894-8-6 Bushing $23.00

Also a couple of O-rings on there for $1.58 each but I am not sure if they were for the fuel drain : 51250-9

337:
page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4

Also reported by Gord Tessier (2003) "You can buy it direct from Airight for $475.00 US. under the 51250-9 part number. If you have the choice I would go with the -8 instead of the -9 as it has the provision for the fuel drain attached. They can be reached in Wichita at 316-943-5752..ask for Keri. She was wonderful. You will need the fittings though listed above as the fittings that were in the Gerdes are NPT and won't work with the new gascolator. I believe they can be e-mailed at kbaker@airight.com.

  • Fuel drain valves - all models (2/07)

Saf-Air was the manufacturer of the outboard fuel drains on our wings. Aircraft Spruce Spruce P/N 05-00977, Saf-Air F75 Drain Valve, approx. $60 - about $45 at Sacramento Sky Ranch, so shop the usual vendors for best price. This is overhaulable, can change out the o-ring if starts to leak

If your Commander is a later model or an early Commander that had the fuel selector/drain SB complied with, then you also have a push-to-drain installed inboard. That piece is Saf-Air CAV-170.

The o-rings that seal the drain to the wing are also replaceable. For the F75 (outboard) the small o-ring is an

  • Master Relay - all models, submitted by Bill Bailey w/additional info by Jeff Boccaccio and Kitt Diebold

For original part numbers, the 112's use Master Relay pn 70-902 and the 12v 114's use pn 70-111224. These are, in fact, the same part. For 114's above sn 14541, the part changes to a 28v coil version 70-907.

The 12v relay is made by Stancor and Jeff confirmed from the factory that it is available from:

Carlton-Bates Co.
3600 W. 69th St
Little Rock, AR 72209
www.carlton-bates.com

Bill reports a new part offered by White Rogers w/ contacts rated to handle current loads imposed by light weight starters AND has a coil suitable for continuous use in circuits subject to charging voltages (14.5V). W-R p/n 586-108111. Should allow LW starters to perform better and extend operating life of relay. Approximately 9 oz heavier than original equipment.

Cost: $50 - $60

  • Master and Landing Gear Relay Diodes - submitted by Bill Bailey (8/07)

Modern spec (equivalent part) for the S-3A2 is SK9005. Widely available from Radio Shack, Huge Peters, etc. In general min spec is:

300V PIV (peak input voltage)
3A continuous
50A surge
200V continuous
form factor - .21" dia x .375" lg

Radio Shack p/n 1N 5404 will work nicely (has performance specs slightly better than those shown above)

Couple of crimp ring terminals and a short length of heat shrink tubing as an insulating sleeve and you have a classy new replacement part. Watch your polarity when you install. Proper polarity is to have the banded/striped end (cathode) of the diode attached to the battery side of the relay coil. The un-banded end goes to the switch side of the coil. (easiest way to to properly replace them is to install them they way they came off... assuming some gumbah hasn't messed them up before)

You want the voltage spike from the collapsing coil to flow back into a large capacitor (the battery) where it can be safely absorbed. Protects all the delicate stuff downstream from excessive voltages.

  • Wastegate rebuild, 112TC, submitted by Joel Schwartz (4/07)

I looked around for approved vendors to repair the wastegate and finally settled on Aerospace welding (952-890-1511). They have locations in both MN and FL. I chose them for two reasons:

#1 - In checking their website they had the best parts blow-up of the exhaust I have seen. http://awi-ami.com/catalog.htm
#2 - They were half the price of another vendor I checked with (complete rebuild for $650)

I got the repaired part back today and it was a work of art. The majority of the part was new. I helped my A&P install it and it bolted up with very few adjustments - I was quite impressed.

Landing Gear / Hydraulics

  • All non-hydraulic gear components, all - submitted by Bob Welch, owner of Welch Machine

#1 Welch Machine Inc. was the supplier for the nose and main gear assemblies, side brace and drag brace assemblies used on Commander 114 and 115 production aircraft since 1993. We produced all landing gear, nose and main assemblies and pre-assembled them prior to shipping to Commander. We can rebuild most gear and we have all hardware used in the
assembly (o-rings, bushings, bolts, nuts, etc.) All parts made to factory print specifications, COC, materials and process certs available if required.

Welch Machine is also the manufacturers of the W115-4 Emergency Dump Valve and the W110-36 Brake Cylinder. We are the only approved source presently for these two items since Commander started back in production on the 114B. We were asked to reverse engineer these assemblies as the Gerdes company had gone out of business and they needed a source for them. We have the parts and assemblies available.

  • Gear Microswitches, all - Submitted by Steve Odetto, updated by Sven Faret (6/06)

Available from Newark Electronics, Newark InOne There are two parts: the switch and the roller. Switch pn 1SE1-3, Newark 23F1875. Roller, JE-5, Newark 23F4223.

Special Note: LPS lubricants and the elastomer seals used on 1SE1 Microswitches are not compatible. If you use LPS lubricants instead of oil for your routine lubrication, be careful when spraying the linkages in the wheel well. In a technical bulletin on the subject, it states clearly that if LPS contacts the seal on the switch, it may deteriorate in as little as 8-10 hours, causing the switch to fail.

If you don't do most of your own maintenance, advise your mechanic to cover the switches when using LPS products on your landing gear components.

  • Gear Selector Switch, 112 &114/A - submitted by Frank Sapienza (7/07)

"The gear selector switch used in our Commander airplanes is a Cutler-Hammer part number 8906K2516. This is well known and comes straight from the parts catalog, as well as the printing on the side of the actual switch.

According to the folks at Eaton (Cutler-Hammer) that switch is obsolete and was replaced by 8906K1385. I have it in writing from them that the K1385 is "functionally no different" than the K2516.

I'm still waiting for confirmation from Eaton as to whether the K1385 is restricted to Piper Aircraft. That is, it was built for Piper and might only be available for sale to them directly. One person I spoke to said it was unrestricted, however the Eaton distributor hasn't been able to get pricing/availability, and the one they have in stock is allocated to Piper.

You can buy both the switch and round "wheel" knob from any Piper distributor. They appear in the parts catalog for the Saratoga II HP and II TC (PA-32R-301/301T). As of July 2007 the Piper parts and prices are:

Gear selector switch, part number 487-936, list price $88.34
Gear selector knob, part number 571-233, list price 13.22

I did buy a matched set of the switch and knob and can confirm that they are the same as the one in my 114. The knob shape and threading is the same, and the switch fits in the same hole on the panel."

  • Hydraulic & brake/oil/etc. hoses, all - submitted by Pete Sattig (5/05, updated 7/08)

Last year I replace the three gear actuator up/down hoses. The oil that drained out was thick and not very red, look like molasses. By filling the tank and cycling the gear until the tank level stabilized and the gear cycled normally most of the oil was new. The hydraulic system/pump is a self venting system, add oil and cycle gear and it's done. I would check all your hydraulic hose and replace any that are stiff or cracked. Get the hose p/n from the parts manual and send it to Precision Hose Technology, Tusla OK 918 835 3660 and some money and the new hose will show up in the mail. Nice folks to work with only need part numbers, aircraft type and s/n.

(7/08) - Precision Hose Technology can also supply any other hoses for the Commander.

  • Main gear actuator bearing, 112 and 114. Submitted by Neal Dillman (1/06)

The bearing on the gear side of my left main gear actuator seized up [due to a burr on the edge of the race -- probably caused by a rock]. After some research, I found the following:

The 'C' in LS-6C is for chamfered. The 114 parts manual only shows the 6C (actually it is mistyped as 5C) as an alternate part, and the primary part as the 6. The 6C is now special order only.

After checking my aircraft it became clear that a prior owner upgraded those parts to the 114 spec (with the retaining washer, and LS-6). As far as I can tell, the chamfering was not being taken advantage of, and it was just the part that was convenient to the factory at the time. So the short story is: if you have an actuator bearing fail, replace the LS-6C with the LS-6, and add the retaining washer. The retaining washer keeps things from turning ugly if the bearing is thrown in flight.

  • Door trim, 112 & 114 models

JC Whitney sells a generic trim that is reported to work well. This is the part that covers the interior plastic edges where they meet the door. JCWhitney.com Search for 'flexible interior/exterior trims'

Also, check out http://www.rushinupholsterysupply.com  -  They have two sizes in the online catalog, on page 8 (snap-on trim). I bought a box of the smaller stuff since the large end of the range is 3/16" and the door lip didn't seem that thick to me. You can call and get color samples if you want to match to the interior color rather than going with white. Definitely a lot cheaper than Plane Plastics or any other aviation source that I had checked at the time. (F. Sapienza 2/07)

  • Seat Bearings - all models. Submitted by Bill Bailey

The sealed (and precision ground) bearings commercially available to replace the factory cheapo versions are equivalent to the NICE 1602. (there are other equivalents... just ask your brg supplier).

These are not expensive and are substantially better quality than the OEM versions. No more lube req'd or carpet fuzz gumming up the works. 1/4" hot roll steel axles will come in at .250 - .252 and w/ emery to fit as req'd will make a great press fit that may be staked to provide inexpensive and probably lifetime replacements.

Update from Joel Schwartz (1/07) The rollers used in the seats on Commanders are also a common part for skate bearings. Here is a link to a site that has them for under $2.00

  • Cowling Latch, 112 - 114/A. Submitted by Steve Posner and Frank Sapienza (9/07)

If your forward "strike" (lower hasp/clip that the latch grabs) has broken, there doesn't seem to be an effect in flight. The rear latch can be a problem with users reporting the cowling lifts upward obscuring the window.

The latch attached to the upper cowling is part number 51L1-1X1AA, and the curved clip attached to the lower cowling is part number 51L8-1AA. If you want chrome plated the latch part number is 51L1-1X1AB and the strike (clip) is 51L7-1AB. Stainless steel latch part number is 51L1-1X1BF, and the strike is 51L7-1BF.
